I need a DSLR Camera. Preferably Canon, Sony

Any recommendations. I was looking at the rebel XTi for 600$. I want something thats good, and not over 600.

Why not Nikon?

Check our Bensbargains.net for a deal every now and then, if you don't need the camera immediately. Dell just had a deal for the XTi body for $319 (no lens) about a week or so ago.

That deal ended about an hour after it went up. I was checking out when they notified me the price went back up to a little over $500. BS!

The D40 and D40x are at nearly the same price point as the XTi/XT. In fact, just a cursory search of BHPhoto.com shows me a D40 at 499.95 with the kit lens.

Nikon | D40 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm Lens | 25420

Strictly speaking, don't buy a camera due to price. Buy it for the lenses, as there is the Nikon and Canon to think about at the price you are looking at. Also, try both out at your local retailer, to see which you feel more comfortable with using. I love the way my 30D feels at my fingertips, and Nikons never did feel the same.

You could get a Canon XT for about $450 with the kit lens from Amazon. That's about the best deal you're going to find on a reputable camera from a reputable seller. Nikon D40 is the next best deal...you can find it for under $500 at multiple sellers including Amazon.

If you don't care about having a sub 2" LCD, go find a deal on a Nikon D50 on Craigslist. It's an old body, but it will AF with screw-drive lenses.

Give us your thoughts.

I like navigating through the menus on my Nikon D40. Any in camera adjustments I need to make don't usually take more than two or three button presses.

However, I have played with my friend's Canon XTi and I love the focus indicators in the optical viewfinder...much nicer in my opinion than Nikons (even the D80 and D200). The XTi is very easy to use in manual focus.

The more pros and cons you make, the better decision you'll make. Go over to Ritz Camera and try what Olympus, Sony and others have to offer. You might like them more the Nikons or Canons. But definitely try before you buy.

You should also take a look at the canon 20D.

I've got a rebel XT, and it's more than enough if you are just an amateur. Anything more and you'll regret it because it will really start to take a toll on your bank account.

What's your price limit? Do you need a lens with more length or wide angle?

If anything, if you want a great lens with out breaking the bank, take a look at the 50mm f1.8 It's a great lens to learn from.

For it's price, it actually does more than what people expect it does.
