pro digital cameras for under $500?

gunna start takin photo in school next semester...want to find the best digital camera that is moderately priced...i dont need one of those cameras that costs $2000 after a lens, just a budget pro-camera.

Oh boy! Another budget camera question!

Nikon D40 or Canon XT are both digital SLR cameras that can be had for under $500.

I can find used Nikon D40s for about $300 body-only... I just sold my D40 body for $275 and I've seen others go that low before. You can also find new ones online for about $500 as well. You could always just get a good point & shoot, Canon makes some really good ones and most are under $500.

Film cameras are great. If anything, digital cameras are worse at taking pictures. Digital is great because you get instant gratification and you can take as many pictures as you want (as long as you have enough space on your memory card) and not have to worry about wasting film.

for school, you want a film camera, and you want an SLR. Digital wont be used untill higher end classes and even then it depends on what class you take, sometimes you just move on to color/medium format. photography 101 or whatever = B+W 35mm film.

Get the canon XT.

If you have a film camera and it still works use it. The only down side is that film and getting it processed will get expensive. Also, when you get your photos processed, ask them to put it on a CD so you can upload them on your computer. Then you could photoshop or whatever you want with it.

Then you could save to get a better DSLR and lens.

Remember it's not what kind of equipment you have, it's how you use it. Basically it's all in the photographer
