Canon 30D, how much money do you have? Because you can get even better ones.
Anyway, the lens matter too, so set your budger accordingly

You don't need a special camera to take 'professional' photos although everyone's definition of professional with differ. Take a look here:
World-Class Photography with a $200 Camera!

If you are interested in a DSLR, I'd start with Canon XTi, Nikon D40x, or even the Pentax K10D.

Pfft, screw what everyone else says --- GET THIS: http://www.usa.canon.com/EOS-1D/ !!!!!!!!!!

Just kidding. However, alpha is right, there are photographers who take amazing shots with very little. But, as far as DSLRs, I'm a Canon man, and I abide by that.

Heh. I think you meant Canon 1D Mark III which was released a month or so ago. The 1D was released back in 2001 and is 4megapixels.

Yeah, I meant the Mk. III. Even the old 1D's quite a good camera though. I just did a quick Google search for "1d Canon USA" and I guess it gave me the old link....

You don't need fancy equipment to take professional looking pictures.

Well if you want to take pro looking pics, I would recommend a DSLR. You will get a much better range of ability with it than with a P&S.

Even a high-end point-n-shoot like the Canon G7 will give you great shots. You don't need to spend hundreds on a dSLR and lens combo.

I have a question.. Do you have a digital camera right now? If so, just practice with that one for a little while until you feel that you need to get a better one. Sure, it's always good to have a nicer camera and all, but it might end up teaching you a little more about cameras in the meantime so you know exactly what you want when you actually do go out to buy one.

That's what I'm doing right now.. I'm using an older version of this camera until I feel that I'm comfortable enough to buy a bigger & better camera. Right now I wouldn't even put a better camera to use.. it would go to waste.

Just my .02

Another great start-up camera would actually be the Canon S3/S2 IS. You can get some pretty good shots out of those -- the only caveats I've seen from using them is that there's no hot shoe mount for flashes (G7 has one) and to get "dirt free" shots, I thoroughly recommend using ISO 100 or below.

The hot shoe mount would especially help in low-light situations, the flash on the S-series sucks, as far as I've used it.

learning on your current camera can only go so far depending on what you have, my roomates nikon p&s has no manual functions like the canons do, so hes learning photograhy by playing with my rebel and 30D

The new S5 IS has a hot-shoe mount. I guess Canon was paying attention to all the complaints about not being able to use an external flash.

Thank God! That's a great bit of news. That and the weak ISO (which was to be expected, for its old price range) were the only real caveats that the Sx IS series line had. Other than that, it's a very good everyday camera, and the Super Macro makes for great product shots (I take photos of such every day)!

I was actually just using our S3 IS for some HDR to LDR imaging -- see if I can get some good results.
