SLR means single lens reflex. Instead of me explaining it, you all can learn about it yourselves from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-lens_reflex_camera

According to Wikipedia, there are some SLRs that have live preview. Those crafty engineers make impossible things possible.

Movie modes are also unavailable.[3] Electronic viewfinders have the potential to give the advantage of a digital SLR (through-the-lens viewing) without many of the disadvantages, but as of 2006 sensor and display technology is insufficient for wide acceptance among the advanced amateur or professional markets that buy digital SLRs.

yea ive heard some mixed reviews of the EOS 1D mkIII, some focus issues mainly. what i like the sound of is focusing with the live preview, you can actually zoom in to a section on the lcd and check focus prior to the shot

umm....i know what single lens reflex means. the Reflex part is the part the F's up live preview.

question...can you use the viewfinder and the live preview at the same time?

edit: *smacks forhead* maybe its a two way mirror?

I know that YOU know what SLR means. That was meant for other people who might not know.

I'm not sure how they're able to get the live preview...it befuddles me. They might be using a double sensor?

The imaging sensor will always be blocked by the mirror, so I think there's a second sensor that takes the reflected image to the LCD .

right but then that refliected image eventually gets to your eyeball. if there was a second sensor in the path of reflection, youd see it.

unless you cannot use the viewfinder and live preview at the same time....

ok im googling around and it seems like the olympus has 2 sensors. one of them is kind of at an off angle so you get some perspective and cropping.

then you can switch the mode and the mirror locks up, redering the viewfinder useless, and uses the main CCD.

Thinking about getting a DSLR and wanted your opinions, here are my options:

Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1MP Digital SLR w/ EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens
Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Outfit w/ 18-55mm Lens
Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Outfit w/ 18-135mm Lens (300 more)
Nikon D40x

Ill be using it for car pics, baby pics, and travel. Which one of the above would be best for a newb to photography and still provide good quality and options? Thanks

The first step you should take is going to a camera store, a real camera store and not best buy's camera section. You cant get a feel for the camera while its got a large anti theft bracket on it and is tethered to the table.
So go to a Ritz camera or some other local camera store, Tell them the cameras you are interested in and they normally will hand you a demo body off the shelf to play with in the store.

The Nikons unfortunately now use SD memory and the Canon uses Compact Flash, if you happen to have an SD card and a CF card, bring them you can put them in the cameras and shoot pictures to take home a later compare. If you are going to compare, shoot the same items in the store so that you have a good reference.

The cameras you are looking at are all in the 10MP range so the major deciding factor is how it feels in your hand. I personally find the XTi too small in my hand to shoot with. If you feel comfortable enough with the cameras, try shooting in manual, make sure you can easily access the different major functions (shutter speed, F-stop, ISO, AF, AF point select). Make sure the Auto focus functions like you want it to.

Any one of those cameras you have listed will take great pictures, its simply a matter of which one your comfortable with. The "kit" lenses that come with most of them are adequate for all of the shooting someone new to DSLR photography, but eventually you will probably want to purchase a new lens.
