If you want a walkabout lens, the Tamron is awesome. Not wide enough on a crop body at all though. 28mm turns into 45mm.
What I'm concerned about. I do have the 10-22, but there is a gap, and in any event takes away from the walkabout-ness.

Are you talking about like model photography (one subject) or candids (one+ but from farther away)?

If you want to do model photography, I'd highly recommend either the 50mm f/1.4 or the 85mm f/1.8 that are both in the $300s range. The shallow depth of field on these two lenses result in spectacular bokeh and the sharpness of a prime lens can't be matched with that of a zoom lens.

I know those are great lenses but I need a walk around, and don't really like switching lenses, due to dust and other factors. You cant get around it, but you can decrease it with the right lens .

go with the primes. listen to alpha. with people, you can always step back or forward some, or have them do it. the quality is well worth it.

at the very least get a good constant aperture midrange. i switched from an 50mm f/1.8 and 85 f/2 to just 1 zoom, 35-70 f/2.8 everday lens, and its a great compromise, especially since the 35-70 is a better range for digital.

however these are all Nikon, you can find somethign equivalent in Canon.

I have to admit my best shots are from my primes. For the walk around I use the 24-70 2.8L but its so friggin heavy. Buy fast lenses or get primes! If you already have a lens in the 24-70 range get the 70-200 2.8L you will love it! Awesome bokeh.

Save up and buy fast lenses or get primes!
primes will be your best bet if your not doing fast shots or sport shots. they offer the sharpest picture. i use a 105mm and that was better at model photography than a 24-70mm.

... primes ...
When I was shopping around for my first DSLR, I took the advice of an experienced photog who suggested that I start out with a prime lens because that'll keep me looking through the viewfinder and moving on my feet so that I can visualize the composition whereas if you had a zoom lens, you are more likely to stand in one place to zoom. The limitations of primes when you use it will also allow you to realize what focal length you need to look into next to fill your focal length gaps.

If I had it my way, a prime lens should be the kit lens that comes with new DSLRs.

I had to buy a more comfortable strap after I bought my 24-70 and put it on my camera. I swear my left arm will be stronger than my right arm if I was a full time photog!

Regardless, it's a spectacular zoom lens.

Even though I don't really have any way of validating such a large purchase, I want to do it!

Well, not really. My post about the primes was really geared toward anyone who are starting out or have yet to decide on their very first glass investment. Because, believe it or not, there are people out there who ask "Why settle for one focal length when you can get one that zooms?".

Aside from that, composition is my single most important focus (no pun intended) when I have a camera in my hand.

How do you like it?
I've had mine for a few months and I've been able to take some pretty amazing photos. I recently purchased an FA 50mm 1.4 for under 165 (A/R) and nothing comes close to it for the price. If you're interested in portraits, then it' a must have.

I KNOW! Lots of very good reviews and very good price... should be a pretty versatile lens too.

Anyone with first-hand experience with this lens?

Edit - Jeshua, you quoted the price for the non-IS lens. eBay has the IS lens for around $700 BIN.

That lens is at least a grand, but it's supposed to be one of the best Canon zooms.

This lens is getting beyond spectacular reviews with its sharpness and 4-stop IS. I wouldn't hesitate to invest in one if I knew I would be shooting with it mostly outdoors.
