Any experience with a good web host?

First time reg'ing a domain name and am looking for advice from any of you who have a website. Any recommendations for a web host? Godaddy.com is the big one, but I have heard bad reviews on them...

I think GoDaddy.com is only good for registering/managing domains. Their web hosting packages are expensive and inflexible. If you are looking for a cheap and good hosting (good reliability, support, and flexibility), I myself have been using hostgator for years - give them a try.

don't believe everything you read -- i have seen the poor reviews as well but usually they don't outline the circumstances. godaddy is perfect for the average person who won't have a lot of traffic (i'm thinking millions) and doesn't want to spend a lot nor get tied into huge up-front costs. i have been with them for at least five years for shared linux hosting as well as domain management and have never had any problems and their support is top notch, especially if you phone in. if you don't want to go with godaddy, i recommend dreamhost (they include a domain with hosting service)... i'm going to be launching a subscription service later this year and will be using them because they have higher or no limits on their shared servers.

update -- ^^ i have heard good things about hostgator as well.

I'm using 1and1. Some people don't like them, but I haven't had any problems so far.

Bluehost is a good host... so is page zone.. I'd stay away from the Canadian Companies as they charge way to much

I can host your website, I run a server out of my apartment.. Current reliability is over 99.98%

Will give you FTP access, and terminal services if you need it. has over 2 hours of UPS backup, etc etc...

I currently host these websites

HiSpeedChase.com - Keeping honest people honest since 2005!
DanielDiambri.com
http://77th-vtfs.net
and I am currently about to start hosting a church site.

I've been in and out of web development over the years - and have owned (and do still own) a fair number of dedicated servers. The only domain registrar I personally trust is either my personal reseller account at eNom or Dynadot.com. goDaddy will screw you over as soon as your domain expires and you forget to renew it. I've had it happen personally several times in the past. Reviews are absolutely right about goDaddy being a turd of a host.

Dreamhost is oversold.

Hostgator is oversold.

If you're looking for a host, I could temporarily host your website (pending it's size and content of course) on one of my servers for free. I can't link you my website as webby has it personally filtered to youtube.com.

use dyndns.org for DNS and domain registrants, btw..
I can attest to godaddy being retarded, I am going through that with that churchs website right now.

You do realize those are just numbers, right? You've agreed to a "fair-use agreement" when you signed up. As soon as you get anywhere near 50 GB (either in space or bandwidth), you can say bye to your account.

sadly the owner of the site I run had there site on godaddy before I got to it (hosting and reg.) I had to change from there cause they only allowed like 5-10 gig traffic and it costed more then what I get hosting for now. (if it wasn't pre-paid for the domain name for 2 more years I would change to some one better or even my host for a all in one deal)

I might get internets from them too soon (if rogers pisses me off anymore)

Why is Rogers pissing you off? Using too much bandwidth for what you are paying?

I have both read the agreemeant and contacted them about this and it's like this the "numbers" that are given are the "MAX" I can use if needed but I do not get is as a dedicated allocation at once, as for the traffic I get over 50gig no prob. so months

Sorry to say they can change it whenever they want. Bell did the same thing.

2am-4am outages are there for doing maintainence, Bell does the same thing.

Oh well. Interwebz should be free, like it was intended to be, not an advertizing engine that it has been mutated into. It's all about the quick buck.

C'est vrai.

What actually happens, is that they'll shut your site down for consuming an unfair share of system resources. You might have all the network resources available to you, but system (processor time, memory, etc) is limited. It's happened before, and they still do it now.

I wouldn't need to pay the price of a dedicated server (nor would they offer them) if they actually gave you all of that.

Being the owner of a web hosting company before, I can assure that those numbers are definitely not the MAX you can use. The terms of agreement usually includes vaguely worded grounds for termination such as "excessive use of system resources (i.e. CPU usage, memory) leading to the interference of service level to other users of the server" etc. As Ken has mentioned above, most (if not all) web hosts are oversold to keep costs down, and bet on the fact that users who underuse their service will balance with those who overuse the service.

They're undersold cause apparently kids can offer a billion gigabytes of bandwidth for three dollars a month and needed to stay competitive (with the kids ironically). It's probably one of the reasons why you (Joseph) and I left the market years ago.
