so i read somewhere on here that shipping EXPRESS through UPS or FedEx would cost less brokerage fees. so i figured i'd try it out.
i bought some parts from Honda Parts Deals, $650 worth of parts, and chose EXPRES to ship. EXPRESS was $10 more over ground so i figure why not take a chance and see what happens, its only $10 and if i did have to pay brokerage then it wouldnt matter if i shipped ground or EXPRESS. it took a week for Honda to gather all the parts together, figures since i ordered 16 items. UPS received the parts from Honda Monday morning. from there it went from RI to CT to KY to Mississauga...in 24 hours, airshipped. i got the notice on my door on Tuesday stating i have 2 packages for me and they would redeliver the following day and the day after if no one answers. my parents are home in the daytime so i know someone will be home to accept. on the notice i had to pay a COD charge to receive my boxes. the COD charge was . . . . . $43.70! for $650 worth of parts. shipping EXPRESS was $105 but ground was $95 so you're not paying much more for express. i called up UPS and payed the COD through credit card, you can also write a cheque and hand it to the UPS driver when they come to your door. while i had UPS on the phone i asked if there were any other charges, the person said NO, you just pay taxes and NO brokerage. good deal. so keep this in mind people, you want something from the states fast and cheaper, ship EXPRESS only with UPS/FedEx. |

i remember the UPS rep saying that it would be waived because of the express service. i'll have to see if i get any surprises in the mail but on the other hand why pay a COD if they would send me a bill in the mail?

also... if the seller declares the item for you and charges you duties/taxes when you pay... you won't need to pay any brokerage/duties/taxes.... no hidden fees when you get the package. that's the best way!

i was looking at the full HFP kit, its only about $300 less from hondapartsdeals.com. the size of the boxes kills the price. collegehills seems to have the better price which includes shipping so it shouldnt be that much more for express.
the HFP brake kit is half the price it is in canada and express is about $200, thats worth it there. |

UPS and Fedex do state on their websites that there is no brokerage involved if the parts are air shipped and i always get surprised when ppl say they dont know about this. all you pay in the end is GST equivalent give or take.
KC...not everytime the express fee is a little different than ground however. in your case....it was low so you were lucky. in other instances, the extra shipping charge can pretty much eat any potential savings in brokerage fees. UPS has a lawsuit on their a$$ cuz of the excessive fee that they charge here in canada as well...dont know whats the status of that is at the moment. personally...i try to avoid them and look for USPS. another way of reducing these charges is to ask the vendor to declare a lower amount on the customs invoice but that can be good or bad depending who you buy from. some vendors dont agree to this and will only declare the true amount and also it may matter from an insurance and warranty standpoint. |
