So I get pulled over at lunchtime......

I was going home for lunch and on a 3 lane hwy. I was in the left lane. Guy in front of me was doing 55 and he was pacing himself with the guy in the center lane. So I downshifted and took off across 2 lanes which were clear and passed them both and came back across 2 lanes back to the left. I was doing about 80 or so and I let off and changed to the middle lane to pass another car and I glance in my rear view mirror and see flashing lights.......on a Jeep Cherokee?????? So I pulled over wondering where in the hell he came from and he comes up asking for my license and shit. He says "know why I pulled you over?" I started to say becasue I was speeding but I got 2 words out and he said "why are you trying to kill people on the highway. What was my excuse" Then left without waiting for any reply from me. When he got in the jeep I noticed another trooper in the passenger seat and I saw writing on the door that didn't look like the state police even though he was in a state cop uniform. He runs me I guess then comes back to my car hands me my stuff and says your insurance card is out of date, get a new one. Have a nice day and leaves. After he left, I saw the back of the Jeep. Department of Evironmental Control!!! WTF???? Who are these peeople and can they pull you over????. I caught back up to him and snapped the pic

What douches...

Almost as douchey as when I got a speeding ticket for going 5 over (which I wasn't, I don't really speed ever).

I've always wondered if those Department of Evironmental Control police could write moving violations.

Does ayone know if those silver "MTA" police cars can write tickets? I've been seeing them all over westchester lately.

i dont really know much about this issue...but it seems that they pulled you over becasue they had flashing lights and knew you would stop for them...but if they had the authority to write you a ticket/warning they would have.....speeding and expired insurance.

My buddy is DEP, he said DEC and DEP have the jurisdiction to pull you over and have a uniformed officer arrive and write you a ticket. They can only do so if they witnessed your violation.

They actually have more jurisdiction than police because they are gov't i believe. Not quite sure on that part though.

He was just trying to flex his muscles

Im a Law Enforcement Officer I work for NY state. DEC police have the authority to issue tickets and in alot of ways have the highest Authority among law enforcement officers throughout the whole state of NY. They are Police officers and have the same powers as any other police.

I wont tell you that you were wrong for crossing two lanes of traffic and doing 80mph while passing another vehicle etc. I didnt see it I wasnt there blah blah blah, but be happy he didnt write you for reckless driving.

Double post, and read my post above yours.

They can do this, I know.

Why is it that when people get pulled over for doing something wrong they or others automatically call power trip on an officer?

Plain and simple you do something that is against the law, you get caught and then most of the time cry about why you shouldnt get a ticket etc. Trying to place blame somewhere else. (Im not saying this about the OP because he just wanted to know if the officer could do this).

Not all officers are perfect etc, I will never claim we are. Just like all jobs out there, we have some bad apples. There are alot of us that are fair and understanding of things though, yet alot of times we are still looked upon as bad guys.

People love to complain about us etc, but love us when they are getting shot at or there is some kind of problem and need our help.

/rant.

I've been real lucky and I think it might be my age. I haven't been pulled for ANYTHING since I owned my last Civic....9 years ago. I get this one and I've been pulled 3 times in 9 months. One red light which the cop was a friend of my g/f so he let me go and the other was a state cop on 87 got me doing 78 in a 55. I told him the truth and was polite and he gave me a verbal warning. They got you...why bother making things worse. This cop did act like he was SuperCop but like I said, I'll respect the badge even though he may be a POS. Anytime I drive away with no ticket, I'm happy :) but this was a first for me
