AutoXer ... moving to Boston
I'm moving to Boston at the end of August ... I have an 06 Si, and I am addicted to Autocross. I'm trying to decide what group I want to try to run with.
Any MA insurance suggestions would be appreciated as well. There is residential street parking in my neighborhood, but in order to get the permit, I need to register in MA, and to register in MA, I must have insurance coverage in MA. I'm finding all the major carriers (like Progressive, who I have now) don't provide insurance in MA? |

The obvious thing to do is to check with the regional/local SCCA chapter, but I'm sure you've already done that!

Well, I'm from Boston , so I'll break the bad news to you. First off, is that MA has heavily state regulated no fault insurance. What this means is there are precious few insurance companies that do buisness in this state. What this really means, is there's is not much competition. The big kicker for registering your car here though, will be EXCIZE TAX. For your shiny new Civic SI, You will be charged about 5% of Kelley blue book value every year your car is registered in MA(there is a depreciation cycle, but a brand new car will be 5%). Yup! expect to pay about 1000.00 this year for the privlige of having Mass plates. Here is a suggestion. If you are coming here for college, leave your SI at home and buy a beater up here. It will cost way less, and you won't mind when it gets beat up being parked on the city streets, because it most certainly will. trust me. If you are moving here for work, then you are SOL.

Ok, I lied. It's only half as bad. It will be about 500.00.

Actually - I was researching that, and found a parking space off-street that I can rent ... so I'm thinking about doing that and just continuing to register my car here in Texas.
Not only that - but the stupid insurance companies and what-not won't let me get it taken care of BEFORE moving ... so where the hell would I be able to park when I get there anyways - in the $37 a night garage? Yeah right. |

In most neighborhoods, there are a few spots for visitor parking. You may have to park far away, because they are few and far between and taken most of the time. Metered parking in most neighborhoods is mon-sat 9:00
to 6:00, so finding a spot overnight isn't too bad. Meters are .25/15 min. with a two hour limit that isn't always enforced. |
