Dealer fees and their legality

I live in Florida and I am burning up ... and not from the heat!

It seems that EVERY new car dealer in this state charges a "dealer fee" that ranges from $500 to more than $800, depending upon manufacturer. Some dealers eat, or bury their fees in their OTD prices while others state that "it's not negotiable".

I am buying my wife an '07 Civic LX sedan and the $600 "dealer fee" i.e. PURE PROFIT really irks me. In some states these fees have been determined to be illegal ... but not here in the Sunshine State!

I was just curious if anyone has been able to negotiate or avoid the fee (whatever amount it was) in their own state?

With the "dealer fee" added to the cost of the car the BEST I can hope for is about $18,300 OTD for an LX (7% tax). I've seen much better deals in other parts of the country and this really upsets me.

... rant over.

Try looking in other states. I ended up doing so and then using the numbers given to me to nail local dealers until I got what I wanted. Worth a shot at least.

I have black 07 ex sedan without navigation. I really want to install factory navigation, but it will cost about 2k with my self-installation. So rather than getting all the navigation parts, I'm thinking of selling my car and getting a new one. How much I can get for trading my car? My car is 07 civic ex sedan w/o navigation. 10k miles on it. Non-smoking car. All clean. From the bluebook, it says about 18k for trade-in, but I don't think I can get 18k from the dealer.

So what are you NOT Telling us.....LOL

Cause that is a price that is really not possible to get to just straight up....and there isnt a SalesManager in the country who would let one of their Si's go for that kind of price.....not straight up anyway.

go negotiate what you will pay for the car. then when you sit down and see the "dealer fee" tell them to back it out of the price of the car, otherwise you walk. and be serious. most dealers wont let you walk for 600 or even 800 bux. the lead salesman will take it off of the price of the car to still show the dealer fee. thats why everyone pays it.

its the same in the boat business. its a nasty trick that works on most people. it is simply pure profit.

Im not lying....thats the straight up price. I got a price quote for $19,760 from a dealer about 40 miles away and my local dealer said they would beat that deal by at least $300....and thats what happened. But I decided not to buy that car because Im now looking for a Fiji Blue Sedan w/Navi.

After reading this thread though, Im thinking I should buy it.

07 EX Coupe
Stupid package with wheel locks, mud gaurds, clear door guard
18330 inc dest. charge....plus TTL and financing at 6% for 60mo with Zero down

Possibly 385/mo with O down
or
350mo with 2k down

I said no deal...but may be worth it?

Sound decent?
Looking at around 23200 OTD after financing
But I will make the financing back if I put 0 down and invest in stocks(yea Im good enough to ensure at least what I paid in finance charges)

The best price I am getting right now for a 07 Si Coupe base model is 21200 + 1700 (destination&handler, tag, proc/doc fee, tax) = 22900.

Comments?
