28 Days Later. That movie still scares the piss out of me every time I watch it.

Saw I-IV. Pretty good plot. Pretty gory though.

I agree with you there are not many good Horror movies at all.

I loved Blair Witch when i first saw it and i still do, even though everyone decided to turn on that movie after seeing it twice.

Saw 1-4 is great movies, suspenseful and tricky till very end. 28 days/weeks were decent. Haven't seen a scary movie since I was in 6th grade watchign exorcist. Last time I was truly scared. everything else out there nowadays is just plain stupid and dumb. Texas chainsaw massacre was decent at best imo..

Yeah I agree with 28 Days Later, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and some of the Saw's. One that I forgot to mention was The Descent. That movie made me and my friends jump throughout the whole thing when we saw it in theaters.

I can't believe I let my friends talk me and my girlfriend into going to see Shutter

Part of me has hope for The Strangers, but as more and more trailers are released, it will probably look worse and worse.

Try watching Ringu (the Japanese Ring series) and Ju-On (the Japanese Grudge series). The Thai version of Shutter(2004) is pretty good too.

Eh, Grudge was just like wtf is this shit.. It was weird, not really suspenseful or anything, can't find any words to really describe it..

QFT!

Try Audition as long as we're staying with recent Asian horror films. That film gives me shivers. There's the 'Night/Dawn/Day Dead' series (including the recent remake). Halloween 1-4 are classics. Nightmare on Elm St. for the classic (cheesy prototype) American horror. House of 1000 corpses & The Devils' Rejects are best watched as a set just to appreciate the brilliance of the latter. Finally, you can't dismiss Scream, it stated, created and affirmed everything about the horror genre leading up to the early 90's in fantastic pastiche.
That should be enough for now. If you really want, I could wax lyrical plenty more (check out 'Salò' on IMDB)

I completely disagree with people that like any of the Saw movies past the first. They are stupid and a bunch of ridiculous twists. It is just blood and gore slapped together with half assed acting and attempts at clever story telling. Stay tuned for Saw 13.

I hated Hostel. Hated it. I've only seen the first few Saw movies, and I thought they were good.

How I forgot Night of the Living Dead is beyond me. Truly horrifying. It's so old, but it's film perfection on so many levels.

30 Days of Night had so much potential. And then they had to go ahead with that ending.

Believe it or not, I've actually seen Audition. Me and my friends saw it as #1 on some "worlds scariest movies" things on tv, decided to find it, found it eventually (it took awhile haha), watched it, and were pretty disappointed to be honest. It really wasn't anywhere near as good as the show hyped it up to be. A lot of build up and not much pay off at the end. I think it has a really weird ending too. Ever since then, I haven't really wanted to give Japanese horror movies another shot.

I can't really get into any "classic" horror movies other than Halloween, they are just too cheesy like you said and the special effects/make up are just too out dated for me to really get into it.

I forgot about The Devils Rejects, I really did like that one. It was a LOT better than House of 1000 Corpses if you ask me.

Bah! Audition is hardly the world's scariest movie. It's like a lot of Japanese Horror movies however, in the sense that it relies more on psychological horror and building up to a finale of sorts. You can't however state the fact that that girl doesn't give you the creeps. Every time I think of her saying 'deeper, deeper, deeper' in that Japanese accent just makes me feel uneasy. I wouldn't however pass off Asian horror films just on that, Takashi Miike is a strange director even for Japanese standards. TRy watching some of the others mentioned here.

Some older ones... In the Mouth of Madness. Also Event Horizon was great. I've always loved Stephen King's IT.
