Thumbs up Dancer in the Dark

This movie is absolutely amazing!

Starring: Bjork , Catherine Deneuve and David Morse
Directed by Lars Van Trier

First off, this movie is quite depressing and slow.

The above aside (if that bothers you) the film is one of the best I have ever seen (and I've seen a lot). It takes place in the 60's in Washington state. The plot centers around a mother (Bjork) who is from Czeckoslovalia and has a condition, which is causing her to go blind. The condition is congenital, so naturally her son is also afflicted. She came to the US in order to make money to get her son an operation (before he is too old) to correct his eyes. Lets just say that things go terribly wrong from there...

It is part musical (Bjork does all the music), part regular movie. The acting is phenomenol and Bjork's performance is second to none, f'n stunning! The directing and cinematography is outstanding as well!

I rarely become emotional due to a movie, but this one almost made me cry...it's that powerful...

On a side note I never, never watch musicals...so don't let the "musical" part turn you away.

Definetly worth a rent. Most video stores should carry it.

If your a Bjork fan you will absolutely this film. Even those who don't will enjoy it...

I can attest to the quality and impact this film makes. I've seen all sorts of crazy stuff in my day, and this is one of the few films I'd hesitate to put on due to how heavy it is. Bjork put on an absolutely phenomenal performance, and simply put, if she wanted to be a professional actor, she could without a doubt. You can tell just how much of herself she puts in her art, and it really came through - almost too much to take at some points. I wasn't huge on the musical aspect of it, but it set the stage for what was happening - not in a cheesy way, just from her perspective. Highly recommended, but be prepared for an emotional blowout.
