My shifting preference tends to be "pistol grip" style vs. the "baseball pitch" style typically used with round knobs. So I lean more towards cylinder shaped knobs. This is the off the shelf knob I bought (the pics was taken before I sprayed it with Plasti-Dip). It's been an awesome little shift knob. It's counter sunk, and screws down EXTREMELY low (although you'll have to remove the plastic ring from your shift boot). It screws down so low that it's almost like a short shifter in itself. Shifts are very short and tight. My only initial complaint about this knob was that it was so smooth that your hand might slip off when shifting. Adding the Plasti-Dip made the knob as awesome as I knew it could be.

This is the custom knob Rob made me. It's 4" tall and I believe the other one is 2.5". I didn't think about using Plasti-Dip until much, much later so when I had him make this one I had him do it in an hourglass shape with the horizontal grooves in it. My logic was that it wouldn't be as slippery as the first knob.

Now THIS bad boy I made myself. It's made of delrin, 6.5" tall, and 2 3/4" wide. I also sprayed it with Plasti-Dip. The notch at the top is the "thumb groove".

I bought one of his "off the shelf" knobs, then had him make a custom knob later. His name's Rob if you happen to communicate with him, and he's really nice. He's also an enthusiast himself, so he's all about happy customers, and giving them what they want. The "off the shelf" knob is probably one of my favorite knobs that I've owned. I sprayed it with Plasti-Dip so it was easier to grip.

I saw your post in the shift knob thread. If you're really worried about heat and metal knobs, I would highly suggest a delrin knob. I've got a few of them and they've been some of my favorite knobs to date. If you like I can link you to a vendor I bought a couple from.
