Low Throttle Engine Whine

Hi All,

I may just be paranoid here, but it's my first new car so I want to be sure this isn't something to worry about.

Car is an '08 Si, been driving it for 2 weeks now. Overall I've been easy on it, only light spirited driving and VTEC once at 500 miles. Currently has almost 600 miles on it.

When driving the car, there is a slight "whine" noise that I can hear from the engine at around 3k rpms when going easy on the throttle (both accel and decel, and in neutral). When driving with moderate to high throttle the sounds cannot be heard.

I just want to be sure this is a normal amount of noise. I know some people have had problems with their trans / diff. The sound cannot be heard on the highway, usually the sound completely goes away after I get out of 4th gear.

Thanks.

Probably a combination of transmission whine and the intake sucking. Mine does the same up to about 3500 and then the noise is covered by everything else.

It's normal as long as it doesn't get too loud . . . if you can hear it at moderate speeds, something might be up.

A secret supercharger would be sweet.

Thanks for the response, I figured it was normal but wanted to be sure.

My '06 Si did it, and my '07 Si does it now as well so you have nothing to worry about. I think it sounds pretty spiffy myself. lol

Any manual transmission Honda that I've ever driven including my stick shift R18 makes a slight whining noise in second gear between 2,000 - 3,000 RPM. This is normal for Honda, just like the ticking injectors.
