A/C problem, need some thoughts.

Cross posted in another forum:

I can't tell if it happened before or after a stereo deck install however....

when I went to use my air conditioner today...it didn't turn on...let me be more clear.

I turn on the a/c and the fan, nothing.
"" "" max a/c and the fan, nothing.
When I hit the HVAC controls, all the lights go on, I feel a temperature change between hot and... warm (since it wasn't cold nor cool when turned all the way cold). the fan changes speeds, it appears everything works except the compressor turning on.

Looking at the engine, and what I believe to be the compressor on the bottom, It doesn't go on. no spinning. When the A/C light is on, the fans do not automatically kick in(radiator fans, not the HVAC fans).

I have checked the pressure, I thought it was low at 15 without the compressor on so i added a LITTLE bit. pressure jumped to 25-30. compressor still wasn't turning on.

ANY idea's at what I should look at before bringing it to dealer? from what I can tell the installer put everything back in ok on the dash (as I can see from all my HVAC controls lighting, included the A/C, MAX A/C and RECIRC lights). I can't find an individual A/C compressor fuse or relay so I haven't been able to check that. sorry for the long post but I just wanted to let you guys know I actually have checked before coming here. I have done a quick search and haven't found anything in this forum that covers this. thanks buds!

nice area you guys have here :) the car that this is for is an 07 si coupe. I'm just trying to figure out if its anything i can check before bringing it in to the dealer and going through the trouble of setting up an appointment. thanks guys ! (oh and yes I used search but didn't find any related information beside a possibly punctured compressor? but i have pressure in my system...)

added a full can - A/C clicked on - when i started I was at 15PSI, when I finished with the compressor on I was around 25-28psi and with the compressor off I was at 40 PSI. I will monitor and see how long it lasts. Does anyone know how many cans it takes to fill up a system from 0 ? I thought i heard 3 cans max. looks like it may simply be the compressor got messed up.

I thought that if it was leaking it would go to 0, but i found it with pressure, so I'm still a little weary as to what happened to the rest of it, I will find out over the next few days as I will be monitoring.

You've got a leak someplace. AC systems are very fussy about how much refrigerant is in it. Too little and it doesn't work, too much and it "could" cause some major damage. You're probably ok with one can but as a general rule you don't ever want to put more than that in it. Without checking, I think it holds about 28-30 ounces.

Your system is low, you've got to bring it in because it's got a leak. Refrigerant dosen't just "go away" in a year for no reason. If you mess around with it and the dealer finds out you could be in for some expensive repairs. Esp if that can of refrigerant had leak stopper in it and it clogs the orifice tube which has been known to happen.
