True K20Z3 oil change capacity?
Did the first oil/filter change on my FA5 last night (love that filter placement). As I'm adding new oil I stop around 3.5 qts to see if any oil has reached the dipstick.
Nothing. So I dump another 1/2 qt in and I'm barely reading on the bottom of the stick. At this point I open my Helm service manual and check to verify how much oil this engine should swallow. 4.6 qts? Yup, 4.6 qts. Add another 1/2 qt for a total of 4.5 qts and I'm just barely above the bottom line. I figure I'm good to do a leak check so I started the engine and let it run for a few seconds, the engine made a little extra noise for a second or two, oil pressure light went out, a few more seconds and then I shut the engine off. I found no leaks, and the dipstick read just below the bottom hole but since the engine wasn't very warm I assumed there might be a decent amount of oil that hadn't made it back to the pan just yet. So I take it for a 5 mile spin, towards the end now that the engine is fully warmed up and park it back in my garage (which is as close to level as your typical residential garage, with a few inches of slope towards the street over a 20' run). Now the engine oil is nice and warm and as much as possible should drain into the pan and I should be able to expect an accurate oil level reading on the dipstick so I give it 20 minutes and come back out, check the oil and I'm at the bottom hole. I add all of the remaining oil in the 5qt container and I'm still only 2/3 of the way up to the top hole. All of my previous Hondas dipsticks would read at the top hole if you added the specified amount of oil and the bottom hole if you were one quart short. Is the K20Z3 somehow different? Do I have a short dipstick? (No jokes, please ) Is the Penzoil Platinum container not really 5 qts? (I'm pretty positive this isn't the case either). How much oil is the K20Z3 taking for other 8th gen members? |

Yeah, I think the SI engine is kinda funny with oil. 1st change to syn, I put in 4.5 quarts and the dipstick says it's like 1 quart over. Next change, 5 quarts to full. Next change, 5.5 quarts to full. I don't get it either.

my si coupe takes 5 qts. I was told that the bottom hole to the top hole is equivalent to 1 quart.
theres no need to drive it around and warm up the oil, just add, start it for about 20 secs to build the oil pressure, check for leaks (don't wanna double gasket it lol), shut it off and then check it. |

! Anyway, you will get your most consistent results if you always pull the dipstick and measure under the same conditions. |

I read the dipstick last night and I'm basically one "hole" or about 1/16" below the top hole having emptied the entire 5qt container into the crankcase. That being said, this engine takes more oil that my K24A1 or F23A4 which I guess makes sense since due to the nature of the K20Z3.

Engine burning oil...?
I recently purchased a used 2006 Civic Si from a used car dealership on the north side of Houston. This dealership specializes in salvaged/rebuilt titles. Needless to say, I got the car cheap because of its salvaged history. Aftermarket parts include a Fujita SRI and what I'm told by dealership to be DC Sports headers. The car has also been dropped and the chassis makes some funky noises. I'm not a huge fan of lowered cars (I'm over 6'0"), nor the ride they produce, however, the handling is excellent. I recently purchased factory Si springs off eBay for $50, but have come to find out that I may need to purchase additional parts. I'm also told that these cars have a lot of chassis problems to begin with. Can someone please help me out? Also, I gave the car a good detailing the other day and noticed oil residue covering the factory stainless exhaust. I asked around and was told that the car's fuel mixture is running rich and that the engine is burning oil. Is this due to the headers being to big for the engine or the fact that I don't have an exhaust to match the header's output? How can I correct this problem? I have plans on purchasing the DC Sports exhaust system but do not know which one to get, cat-back or axle-back...The only other problem with the car is the plastic washer fluid container has a leak in it. Is this an easy fix?

Take it to a shop in your area that has a good reputation. Trying to diagnose oil leak problems over the internet is not the way to go about it. Additionally they should be able to answer the rest of your questions. I hope it was a REALLY good deal, sounds like the car has had a short but difficult life.
