Brakes are incredibly noisy 12K miles

I have an 07 civic coupe and a few weeks ago the brakes started to be extremly noisy. Whenever I am stopping or moving slowly I hear a loud screeching sound coming from the brakes. Now the odd thing is if I turn to the right the sound is less but if I turn to the left the sound is worse. I know nothing about cars but shouldn't brakes last longer than 12K miles? I had the oil changed and tires rotated at 12K but the people at tires plus said the brakes looked fine. I called Honda and the woman told me brakes are not covered under warranty. Any help here would be much appreciated, and if there is any other issues that an 07' civic may have such as TSB's and such I would like to have the dealer take care of those too.

Thanks :)

Also I installed aftermarket hids on my civic, should I take those off before going to the dealer? I would hate to have my warrenty voided or something because I have them in.

It is illegal for a dealership to "void" your warranty. This has been stated on here before that you will always have your warranty.

A dealership can "deny" a claim, but they can't void your whole warranty.

Additionally, HID lights would only cause a denial in that specific mechanical aspect. For example, if your headlight assembly melted all over the front end of your car because you put 2000 watt bulbs in it - claim denied.

However, my question would be, WTF do headlights have to do with brakes?!?

You won't need to remove HID's before going to the dealership for this :)

have some body stand next to your car while your moving really slow and see if the noise is coming from front or rear. you're probably on the wear indicators in the rear. for some reason the rears wear out faster than the fronts. not sure if its the same on the civic, but it was that way on my tsx and my sisters accord.

Thanks for the info guys. If it is the brakes going bad don't they normally last longer than 12k miles? I dont ever remember having to replace brakes so early on in a cars life. Also, would this be something covered under a warranty? The woman in honda service told me it is not covered if it is brakes but I would hate to have to spend money that I didn't need to if by chance it is covered.

It depends on your driving, maybe you ride the brakes too much, some people step on the brake right away instead of letting the car coast on it's own. I've had brakes that last 40 to 50k miles and more and I know people who've done brake jobs with less than 25k miles on cars

a little under six thousand dollars. Thats for the non-ceramic type. If you want ceramic's with the high density washer fluid option it's a little over $7,200. I'd recommend calling your local church for a donation fund before hand.

Actually, those figures are about right (maybe a little inflated). New braking systems from Brembo or other companies cost around $6800 installed.

OEM breaks installed by your dealer would be pushing $3500.

This should include rotors, calipers, lines, components, etc.

If your talking about just pads...$80.00 + labor

He's obviously talking about brake pads.. they are under $50 for parts.. and if you have a ratchet and some sockets.. do it yourself it's VERY EASY. If you don't know how, then buy a Hayne's Manual.

The rear disc brakes ware out faster because the breaking is distributed, if I remember correctly, 60% in the rear and 40% in the front. My dealer told me this and said that it was to help keep the car’s front end from dipping as much during breaking. The rear brakes are also not as thick as the front. This is why they ware out first.

Well I took the car to Honda and they found it was a cover or something by the brakes or for the brakes, I forget which, that was rubbing against the rotor causing the sound. They said the brake pads looked fine and didn't charge me anything. Thanks for the help guys :)
