Oil Life In Months not Mile Fist Oil Change?

Ok I have a 2007 Civic SI Thats almost a year old and has 1544 miles on it. The oil life indicator is at 70%

My question is do I wait for the indicator to get to the 15% or is there an equivalent to the 15% in months?

The car has not had its first oil change yet. When I bought it the dealer said that Honda uses special break in oil and it should be left in till the oil life indicator went down to 15%. Is the special break in oil a real thing or a dealer myth? I'm asking because thats the first time I've heard of special break in oil.

Follow the maintenance minder. I did. Took about 5k miles. Also I've read around that they do have a break in oil.

5000 miles, or every 6 months for most conventional oil.

I know it's none of my business, but at that rate of mileage, it doesn't make sense for you to own that garage trophy. And I thought I accrued low miles...

I actually went to my dealer today to get my first oil change. I have had my car for about 6 months and it has 2100 miles on it. The mechanic looks at the 60% oil life and says "what are you doing here" lol...he told me to wait till it read 15%. I thanked him because he saved me $30 bucks that any greedy dealership would have taken advantage of.

Change it when the minder says 15% or one year from last change. which ever is sooner. and yes there is a special oil but dont treat it any diffrent then normal oil. but you should prob think about changing it soon. Also i would suggest at least reading the maintenance section of you manual.

Wow, I put that on in a month of normal driving.

I'd change it if it where me. There are acids and other unwantables that build up when a car isn't driven very often. Oil can normally combat these, but not for a long period. With that kind of mileage getting put on the car I'd change it yearly, it's recommended that you do it sooner, but I've never heard of problems from it being in there too long.

Phone Honda and ask them what you should do. Normally you should change it every year at the least but you might leave the break-in oil longer. It has special lubricants added to help your engine wear in properly.

I drive it at least once a week. To tell you the truth I've been out of work since march 3rd and there was just under 800 miles on it so I've put 700 miles on it in the 2 months and if i don't find a job soon my EH2 will have to go. that means ill probably start putting more miles on it.

Its really up to you :]

The maintenance minder will come on at 15% oil life left.

The way the % works is it spans a total of 7,000 Miles.

If you regularly do oil changes at 3,000 miles, then you will want to change it around 40-45% (3000 is apprx 42% of 7000).

I try to change mine at the 50% mark or 3500k.

Aha!!
So the minder is based pretty much or solely on mileage then? hmmmmmm
I've always been a 3k oil-changer religiously, so I dunno.. Do I even need to worry about the minder? I'd rather see the outside temperature anyway. :)
