RH Installed, Power Steering Problems.

Hey guys,

I drive an '06 si and just installed an SSR header. On my drive home, the power steering went out. I cranked the car up just a few minutes ago and the eps light isn't on any more and the power steering is back. However, I read about someone who installed a header and it melted the wires for the eps. Is this something I should worry about or was the failure just a fluke? Should I put thermal tape around the wires or something?

I'm going to try to get under my car and check the wiring harness in the morning. But I don' have jack stands so I'm a little sketched out about it. At the same time, I would rather make sure none of my wires are melting than drive it and really mess something up.

I couldn't wait, because I was so worried about the electrical system. Sure enough, there is definitely some melting going on right underneath the header. I put the wire harness back right where it came from, but apparently that wasn't good enough.

Do you guys think thermal tape will be good enough to prevent any further melting? Regardless, I am going to have to cross my fingers and hope nothing is too far gone to just be patched.

Unfortunately, it will damage more than just power steering if I ignore it.

Okay. I'm going to go pick some up tomorrow. I just really hope that the damage isn't already done and the PS just shut off because the wires got too hot. I couldn't feel any exposed wire and it seemed like only the plastic shield around them was melted, but I guess we will find out.

I bought this stuff from AutoZone called Thermo-Shield. It's just some thermal insulating material with an adhesive backing, it says it is designed for hose and wire protection and protects up to 2000 degrees.

I got a better look at the wires today and none of them were melted, so I should be good now. I'm going to drive around for a while and make sure the PS stays on.

Everything is good. The thermal tape solved it.

ahh this same exact thing happened to me except.. I had to drive with my open stock header to my friends to finish the header install, this is when the power steering went out.. when i turned my car back on and the bcrh was on the light went away, but then came back after driving around a little and i lost powersteering again. i tried taping it and putting more plastic casing around the wire and i also ziptied the wires farther away from the header it .It didnt look like the wires were melted through completely just the casing around them. Is it possible that i destroyed a sensor or something from the heat? because the light just stays on now. something must be really messed up..
