if there is a problem with your gear, why would you have denied a replacement?

What I meant is I denied his offer to change just the tranny oil which is what he offered me in the first place. Supposedly he did this to another customer and it solved the issue, but I know my car's problem was beyond a simple change of oil. Needless to say, once he took appart the tranny, he said he found metal pieces from the grinding..

btw..the rental is not "free of charge", nothing is. You pay $100 deposit for the car they give you and you get your money back when you return the car..at least that's how they do it down here

Just to clear things up, I did in fact have the 3rd gear set replaced and I was first on the waiting list at my dealership and they took the entire day to do it.

Yeah, I had to put a $50 deposit down, but it was refunded about a day after I returned the car.

I just got my car back today and they replaced the 3rd gear. The dealer also replaced my catalytic converter due to an engine light. As soon as I pull out the parking lot, I hear this winding noise. It gets louder as the RPM goes up, and goes away when I stop. I take it right back to them, and they send a tech out. And this tech guy is old and a jerk and says he can't hear anything. So they said another guy, and he says he hears it, but doesn't know where it is coming from or if that's how it's "suppose" to sound. I had my car for two years now, I know what it sounds like and it's not suppose to make that sound. Now I have to go back on Monday or Tuesday to go see the service manager. Any suggestions what it could be?

After 3 months of waiting, the part(s) are FINALLY in, and I've got an appointment for replacement. Somehow I think my repair slipped through the cracks. There's no way this is happening on a first-come, first-serve basis.

mine has been in the shop for two days so far i hope they dont mess things up...i'll keep my fingers crossed. But then again i made SURE there was a problem with my third gear, i could pretty much put it in third gear and it would not move at all.

Tip for the guys who are having trouble with their dealership replicating the problem.

My "third gear wall" is incredibly sporadic, but it seems to happen at least once a day.
Mine's not so bad that it pops out of gear or grinds, but it's just incredibly annoying to have to shift back to second or fourth and then into third again or actually FORCE it into gear when it happens (which can't be good for the tranny).

With that said, I believe I've found a way to help the mechanic "replicate" the problem.

1) get the car rolling through first, second
2) clutch in and shift into third
3) if you don't get the "wall", keep the clutch in and shift back to neutral, then back to third a couple times
4) if you still don't get the bad shift, shift back into second and clutch out to get the tranny spinning again and repeat.

The key is to have the tranny spinning while you're shifting in and out of third to catch the "bad spot" that's causing the wall.

^^^yeah doesn't convince mine still. i did that....went through the gears about 7 times at different speeds, different agressiveness...etc. AND on top of all that the mechanic is a friend of mine and he can't even convince them to let it go through even though i can't replicate it on the test drive.

so i text him every morning when it grinds and any other time during the day that it grinds so maybe he'll get fed up and convince his boss to let it go through.

lol the otherday i was driving around and realized that in order to keep from popping out of gear i try to revmatch as much as posable it like 2-3 rpm... well the knotch feels just as bad or actuly a bit better then if i dont use a clutch at all...

then i realized that i tought my self how to drive without a clutch?, without so much as a GRRRRRT!, nothing... and with our cars and there touchyness thats not easy.
