Unhappy 2007--Grinding noise--Automatic Trans

I have had my 2007 Civic Automatic for 15 mths now. It makes a slight grinding noise when I put it into the Drive gear. It does this from Park to Drive and from Reverse to Drive. I took the car in to the dealer and the mechanic said the 2006/07 models have a different engine than previous generations, that I have to drive/shift gears slowly, not like before. I have consciously slowed down my shifting but it still makes this noise. My boyfriend heard the noise too. It makes this noise even after the car has warmed up, at full tank of gas, at low tank of gas. This is my 4th Civic and I've been driving for over 20 years. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Most but not all automatics typically make a noise when switching from reverse to drive, or the other way around because of slack in the drivetrain when gears, bearings, cv joints, etc all have an opposite force applied.

My Ford does it, my Volvo did, the older TL's would make a pretty good noise too sometimes, it's normal.

You have a good car, I would not worry about it.

Make sure you are at a complete stop, foot on the brake pedal before switching gears. Do not gas until D or R is fully engaged.

"Don't shift gears while the car is still moving. This is the MOST common thing I have seen people do to their cars and you'll destroy your transmission in no time flat. I'd say about 85% of people do this. Some worse than others. Usually done when backing out of a parking spot - before the car comes to a stop in reverse, they throw it into drive and you hear that terrible 'clunk' as the transmission slams into gear. Almost everyone I have seen with transmission problems at low miles, it was because they were guilty of 'on-the-fly' shifting."
