i had this same problem. i think it might be the break pad wear indicator, i took my car in and had the pads changed and the sound went away.

I think if this was the brakes, it would make an annoying whistling sound. Plus it would happen all the times, not just when the car in reverse.

I have the same problem

I actually just joined after a google search for "civic si noise when in reverse." I have a 2-door 2006 Civic Si, with about 55K on it. (So I definitely know the NORMAL low-whining noise for traveling in reverse).

Starting one week ago, I started noticing a much louder, moan-like "ehhhhhh" sound only when in reverse (seems to be aggravated when I steer). It happens both when accelerating AND with foot all the way down on the clutch. It also happens if it is in neutral and is rolling back.

I will do my best to youtube it and provide the link

check your brakes and your e-brake. your e-brake could just be binding up. apply your ebrake slowly when reversing and see if the noise goes away.

When I place the vehicle in reverse and start moving backwards, I get this very strange sound. It sounds like someone is honking a car horn at me. Imagine holding down the horn button on your vehicle. Its a long (eeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhh noise) What the hell is this? This noise only happens in reverse. When I slow, and move the vehicle into 1st gear, it goes away. It only happens in reverse. It is not faint, but loud and noticeable.

Ohhhh man!! my '06 does this tooo!! What ended up being the problem?

i'm with the guy regarding the e-break idea.

does the noise sound like our typical dinky civic horn or a real horn?
