Stock Battery
I have a simple question. How long have you had your stock battery. How long till your had it replaced because it died or whatnot? How long are they rated to last before recommended replacement?
I have a 07 Honda Civ 2d 1.8L4Cyl and I have had it for less than a year and my battery is low on juice and it looks like I will have to replace is within the next month. Optimal Bat worth getting? -Fett |

I have no "upgrades". My car is stock. I had a small fender bender which just scratched up my paint and crumpled my from driver side panel. I put it in my garage for 12 days. When I went to take it to the shop it would not start, but all of the dash lights would come on then flash off and come back on then flash off. When I turned the key to start the engine the instrument cluster flashed in rapid succession with an audible "click, click, click". It is kind of hard to explain... like strobe light fast all the lights on the dash on and off. I put my battery charger on the battery for a fast charge for 12 minutes and it started no problem after that. My battery as it is right now after two nights of slow charge is still medium-low. The little sight glass should be green and right now you can barely see very little green. I know sometimes batteries have internal shorts.
Strange no? -Fett |

Not really strange. Most car batteries are not cool with the idea of leaving it unused for more than a couple of days without causing some damage. The damage is called sulfation, where hard, crystal-like particles form on the battery plates preventing it to hold a charge.
Depending on the condition and age of the battery, sulfation more or less happens when the battery is unused for any length of time, though it is more pronounced if it is left in a discharged state. Quality batteries have the technology to slow down sulfation somewhat, extending the life of the battery or otherwise able take more abuse. But I would guess that the stock battery is anything BUT quality. |
