honda is replacing my 3rd gear!

ok, just posting this to see if honda did this for anyone else and if so did it work for you? my 07 fg2 has 8200 miles on it. about 1800 miles in 3rd gear wouldnt hold into place. at first i thought it was me so i would be very cautious. then i looked into it and found others with the same problem. i took it to honda when i was getting my first oil change and when i told them about it they looked at me like i had 5000 heads...i was pissed. so pissed that i called corp and filed a complaint. they called the dealership and the next day i came in they were much nicer lol. I WASNT. i came in demanding help. they made me take the car out with one of their machanics. of coarse i couldnt duplicate it. the guy was cool enough to tell me he believed me and asked if he could drive it for 15 minutes. i let him. and guess what!!! they got 3rd gear to pop!. honestly i was happy to hear this. he said it could be a problem with the syncros. they looked at everything and nothing was found. they changed my tranny fluid and gave me some shit about driving the car hard....i was like (yea yea f@&k u in my head) needless to say , it worked. NOW after i kept the trip b odometer to see how many miles i could go without having problems with 3rd gear. 3400 miles later....guess what! again the same problem. before i even called the dealership i called corp to complain again, since they had me on file already they didnt even ask me a question, they said take it in, any problems, let them know. i went in and the guy said hes ordering a whole new 3rd gear. there gonna take apart my tranny on monday and replace that gear. im hoping this works. any one have this done to their car yet?????

I had it done when Honda replaced 3rd, 4th, and a bunch of other parts for an unrelated problem (I did have the popout and grind problem though). It only lasted for a few hundred miles before the grind and popout returned, just like when it was new.

Unless it's an updated part, like stated above, it's probrably going to come back once it wears in.

Wow, when I called American Honda, Kenitra told me that she couldn't (read: wouldn't) do anything until the dealer got it to be replicated. She was no help at all.

She also said American Honda has never heard of this issue. Twice. She said those case numbers in my case numbers thread were irrelevant. Lovely woman she was.

Any how, after close to 20 visits, I got my gear to pop out on a tech and it will be replaced when the fix comes. I'm not having my car ripped apart to put the same shit parts in it.

Having to have my car ripped apart by a company's dealerships who can't even remember (after I mention it even) to put the right motor oil in my car doesn't sit well with me.

Having to have my transmission repaired and dropped after 20,000 miles sits even worse...

I would *strongly* suggest you reconsider wasting your time and patience. Unless there is an official fix, they will be replacing your third gear with the exact same third gear that was in there to begin with, just that it will be "new." Give it a bit of time and everything will be back to square one. It's like having a bad batch of meat. You can complain all you want. If I give you a replacement from the same batch, what difference did it make? None.

How is it then some people are not having 3rd gear issues, including me?

Must be from the other batch....

I have read that some SI owners have had luck correcting the 3rd gear issue by using Amsoil fluid. I have an LX, not an SI, but can tell you that Joe Greasemonkey Mechanic at the dealership will not put together your transmission with the same care that the factory did. I would exhaust every option before going that route. A fluid change using Amsoil is fairly cheap, so perhaps you should try that first?

No one knows the answer to this question, so it is pointless to even ask. Nonetheless, given the fact that Honda's "fix" will be replacing syncros and detent ball springs (for shifting). This tells me that there is, in fact, a fundamental flaw with this transmission (or some of them).

But it's beating a dead horse. Some of our transmissions have utterly no problems, and others do have problems. Given we can't even get all Honda Corporate people to acknowledge there being a fix coming, I highly, highly suspect we will never truly know why some people do have the problems and others do not.

What I am curious, however, is whether or not all new Civic Si models will come with the new parts of this fix from the assembly line. If this is the case, it should be a flat out recall for all Civic Si models from 2006-2008, whether afflicted or not, as if they needed to change the design on the assembly line, they are subliminally acknowledging that the old one was flawed. Still, we'll never know that unless we have a fix-applied new Civic Si torn apart and compared to an old one. And I doubt that will be happening any time soon, and I'm certain Honda would sooner drop dead than make that common knowledge. Hell, two years later and they are still overfilling the MTF extensively from the factory.

But for what it is worth, User_name:, some Si owners have had their flawed transmission replaced and had no problems afterwards. Others had the same problem come back. The even more unfortunate ones had the old problem, plus even worse new ones, come back. It's a crap shoot, if you ask me. I think anyone doing it before this fix comes out is asking for nothing but trouble.

At my first oil change about a year ago, they put a branch new third gear in mine. The gear is a little notchy (which I assume is normal), but waaaaaay better than before. I only grind it when I get lazy and don't engage the clutch properly. So far it has never been like when I first got the car. I would like it to be smoother like the other gears, but no crazy grinding or popping out.

that's what my dealer told me. they also told me that if i got a new 3rd gear, honda wouldn't do anything else to fix my car since they already "fixed" it. i hate my stealership..

it's true aftermarket MTF will help, but it'll still be there. i'm running with Royal Purple MTF, and it's much better. 3rd gear grinding is still there though.. just less..

My third will grind every now and then when i get lazy... not as bad as i read some of you guys have it. Hopefully they can fix it soon. Although i do tend to have like 2 clicks to get into third. not like one click like all the other gears.
