I hate going from 1st to 2nd at high revs. In order to avoid griding 2nd you have to shift slower. You can't just pop clutch, shift to second and be on your way. And even if i do shift slower it still feels notchy. I like red line second cuz you really feel the pull and vtec hits real fast. Just a shame 2nd gear acts up like that.

Add another category up there.

Those with slight 3rd gear pop outs, or refusal to go in 3rd gear. along with a nice whining sound coming from 2nd gear, and sometimes 4th (used to be only when cold, now its all the time)
And those who's 2nd gear is clunky/crunchy/grindy.

Yeah this problem is addressed along with the third gear issue as well. I noticed it when I first got my Si. So I guess it will be fixed with the third gear issue as well... Hopefully

I didn't get a chance to ask my dealer what syncros would be replaced with the fix. He said syncros, plural, so I'm assuming it's more than one.

I just know that my dealer said that the new fix includes new syncros, plurally, and detend/detend ball springs,w hich are supposed to help with shifting.

I vaguely remember reading:

3 syncros on 1st & 2nd
2 on 3rd & 4th
1 on 5th & 6th

None on reverse, so don't ever put it in reverse unless you're completely stationary or you'll get the nasties

Are u paying for this? If not, how'd you get the dealership to fork the $ out? Tell me your secrets I do love my car but it's doesn't quiet have that "perfect transmission" I read about prior to buying it

No. I've been on my Honda dealership for two years with this car. There's always something new popping up (or out, in this case, sadly). I've had tons of warranty work done, and one constant has always been third gear.

Almost twenty times in the dealership and being told "We can't replicate it" and I finally got them to replicate it this most recent time. It's about god damn time. I wouldn't pay a dime to get them to fix something Honda royally screwed up.

My secrets? I don't give up. I'm obsessive, and I have a monumental sense of right and wrong that borders on craze. My dealerships know better than to take me lightly. My biggest secret is persistence. Don't give up. You paid for this car, it needs to be exactly the way it is supposed to be.

Don't ever feel bad about making the dealership to stupid little work. If Honda built the car correctly the first time, you wouldn't need this stupid little work done.

lol, thanks. I sorta gave up after 2 times to 2 different dealerships for the 3rd gear issue. Went and put in AMSOIL myself and it helped. But now that I'm used to shifting I notice the 2nd gear is problematic too compared to the other gears. I might have to do what you do hehe.

So is your car all better now? No problems whatsoever with the 2nd & 3rd?

I just got off the phone with Honda service about my 1st to 2nd issue, ugh.

They said I shouldn't be revving it high when I shift. GRRRR. **That is what the car is designed to do.** Max power comes at 7800RPM, not 2000. Cripes, if I wanted to just drive it like a grandma I would've never sold my 02 LX.

I'm thinking I'm going to record all phone conversations, then if I get any more crappy responses to post them up as a featured news story, as part of a long-term reliability report on how the Si transmission is faulty, not to mention the teeth-pulling experience of getting Honda techs to acknowledge the issue. I can round it up as a buyer's beware to say that until they address the issue that it's not worth the hassle of owning one.

I periodically contribute to the cars channel and they've let me post as I please, so I'm thinking I should leverage that.

example of an article I wrote

I am so sick and tired of hearign people on here being told they "beat" their car" or shouldn't "rev so high when shifting", when the car is advertised (not just designed) to be "race-inspired".

You don't get to advertise for race-inspired if you aren't willing to take the heat when shit happens. I'm sorry, that's not how it works. If you advertise the car as being racy, you damn well better expect the parts to hold up to being "raced". And by raced, I mean, used as they're advertised.

Otherwise it's just false advertising.

^^

I hear that, for the price and in all practical sense I love the Si for what it is, except when it doesn't work as advertised =[

Lemme IF and when your car gets fixed lol. Mine's not that bad, it's just forcing me to shift slow or grind like a bitch into 2nd. I hardly ever even redline 1st gear becuz of this crap

^ I may not have done any news broadcasts (yet), but I've fought and fought and fought. It finally was replicated. Just don't give up.

it's covered within the 3yr/36k waranty right? As long as I can get them to replicate? Did you just keep coming back to them every week saying u have the same problem? I would imagine they would start turning you away or making u wait a long time before they "check it out", they dont want to service someone who's not gonna pay them.

2nd gear issue

i saw a thread about this before, but i cant find it.

so i was doing some runs today, and i couldnt get my car into 2nd a couple of times.

yes the clutch was all the way down.

but every time id try for second, it wouldnt go in. (thats what she said)
i learned that it only happens when i try to do it as quick as i can.

i drove the car back home fine with no problems.

what can it be?
has anyone ran into this problem before?
