Lose Oil Randomly

I bought my 2007 Civic Si sedan back in October 2007. In December I was driving from SoCal to the Central Valley and on arrival my "oil light" came on. Or arrival to my final destination, the car had leaked oil all over the ground and it had clearly leaked all over the front right wheel and wheel well. It was everywhere. The dealer claimed it was just a bad seal on an oil filter. New filter, new oil, and problem solved.

Tonight, I started to smell burning oil, and was high beamed from behind only to see the long traling plume of smoke. I got off the freeway as fast as I could. The oil light turned on, and I stopped the engine as quickly as I could. Massive amounts of oil flowed out from under the right front tire.

The dealer is looking at it now, but I am not happy with this Honda. My previous 2 Civics (1990 and 2002), and RS-X (2004) were never a problem, but along with a wheel/tire issue I had (not the car's fault) I have had this car on a tow truck 3 times in the last 3 months....seems like bad luck...

this is not an issue of losing oil randomly.... like burning oil. You obviously have a problem. Have you had the oil changed recently? Did you hear anything odd, or have any recent mis shifts?

I've yet to read any post where a user had oil just pouring out - unless it was where he had mis shifted and literally blown the engine - had the car towed. I've seen a few threads where users had blown their engine - pulled over, and saw oil pouring out.

Obviously if you had the 1st issue checked by honda, and it was in fact a bad oil filter - I'm interested to see what in the world happened.

OMG that horrable... i havent ever herd of that, that the oil went out like that all over the wheel well, thats almost un posable... sometines when people change oil filter they forget the only seal and double seal the filter, they bunch up and leak like a siv... here at work we forked over 15g to rebuild a motor that went down in the states after it puked out all the oil, fight after a oil change and grease... but this is a 16Lvolvo, not a 2L honda... lol.

on my first oil changed i got 340 miles on it and stopped for gas and checked my oil while filling up and it was BONE DRY so i ran to walmart and got 4 qrts of valvoline full synthetic and filled it up took it home pulled it in my shop jacked it up and set it on stands (4 so it was even) and didnt see any leaking OR any trails where oil had run down from the head or the oil filter or anything checked the drain plug and the oil filler cap and nothing . . . left it on the stands for a week in the shop and never saw a drop hit the pavement . . . i have no idea where that oil went and i still check it every tank and have no problems . . . but it scares the hell out of me to think where that oil went

Maybe they didn't fill it with enough to begin with? Maybe not at all? Did you do the change yourself?

To the OP, I feel for ya man, I wonder what the problem would be? I've heard in the RSX-S that once your oil light comes on, your pretty much toast. Apparently this isn't true in the Si....

Sounds to me like you may have a double gasket on the oil filter causing the oil to blow out of there. Be sure to take it easy for a few hundred after they "fix" it...

No mis-shifts. Was driving in traffic right before it happened and was doing 65 in 6th when I noticed the smoke. The first time it happened there was no smell or smoke or anything. Just the oil light when I reduced my speed to get off the freeway.

Got the car back this morning. Was told it was a bad drain plug. The dealer did not point any fingers about hitting anything or my driving, just that they took care of it. Offered me a detail, but I had to get to work!

The first time I had not been due for an oil change yet so it was still on the factory oil and filter. last service: I had the oil changed at the dealer on 2.18.08 before I drove to Sedona and back last week. Checked it before I left Sedona on the 23rd and the oil was clear and not at a low level.

The dealer told me that they cleaned the undercarriage. This monring I parked at work, and left the car for about 2.5 hours. Good sized puddle of clean oil under the car. Hope it is still not leaking. At this point I prefer to hear the dealer lied to me about cleaning it, and this is excess from the orignal leak last night.

I hope this is over soon...this might be a good excuse to get a new car!

BTW - was at the dealer last night and the Mugen Si they have had there since like Oct or November is still there!!!

Thanks for listening all...
