Advancing the timing on an R18 to run Premium

Can it be done on the R18 like on older civics?

Not at present since there is no engine management system available or even a piggy back at this time that would allow you the ability to adjust the timing. Granted, Greddy has their V-Manage that is suppose to provide this functionality, but I don't think it is available yet.

no distributor on r18s, coil packs

if you run premium on the car it might advance the timing some automatically, but i honestly have no clue

Personally I wouldn't do it unless you plan on making your car a race car of some sort. Plus, it'll void any warranty you have. Don't know if thats a concern for you or not though...

The ECU will adapt somewhat. I do get a shade better performance when using premium.

Prove it....

Stick to 87. Unless you are boosted, on the bottle, or are running higher than factory compression.

Kidekat is right on. Your map will have a preset maximum advance it will run. If it detects knock it can retard the timing to prevent damage to the engine, but it won't advance it. Basically, it doesn't know you put premium in it, it just knows its not detonating.

Difficult to. I just know that my engine feels smoother, quieter and with a bit more low end grunt with 'premium' than with regular.

I should qualify this by saying that where I live, while gas quality has improved, due to various factors, 91 is still possibly only 86-87. I actually mix 97 (yes, we do get 97 at a few pumps) with 91(87?) 1:3 and achieve this. It costs me about about 2 $ more per tank and have not observed any ill effects so I continue. But 97 by itself does not feel any much better than this mix and actually I feel the engine does not like it. At another pump, I do get ready 91 premium too, which has much the same effect as my mix.

I do suggest you try it for yourself and see, since IMO premium cannot otherwise harm the engine/fuel system.
