2nd gear problems

I've seen the post on the trubles of the 3rd gear but noticed that some people were complaining about 2nd as well. I have a new 08 sedan and i'v been having trouble at times getting the shift lever to enter 2nd gear. it sometimes does this a little in 1st and 3rd as well but it is worse on 2nd gear. it seems to be a little more frequent when the car is still cold but occures at all operating temps. I have to really force it in to possition sometimes and it has a sort of grinding feel to get it into 2nd gear possition. this has caused me to grind my gears 3 or 4 times already.

could the problem be with the shift lever components and not the tranny?

did honda fix anything on the 08 man. transmitions?

does anyone else have the same problems??

It being an 08 and new I would bring it right back to them and have them take a look at it, don't wait and get shafted.

my second gear syncros took a shit on my tranny after 20k miles. shifting 1-2 at high rpms always caused problems only to crap out on me. dealership took care of it, but now i have the 3rd gear problem i never had before

if you'r reving to 7000 or 8000 RPM in 1st gear, go buy an automatic becuase you haven't got a clue how to drive a standard

Gawd, no wonder you have transmission problems then.

Yep, only at high rpm for me too. Probably bad tranny syncro. I hope they come out with recall before my warranty runs out. I have 30,000 miles on mark!!

Driving Manual Shift - A Primer

"The ideal RPM's for maximum power balanced with fuel economy ranges between 1,500 and 2,500 RPM's (in most cars). Typically, when the engine hits 3,000 RPM's the driver should shift to a higher gear."

Doubt he does it every time.

When giving the car all it's got, what RPM do you suggest he shifts at? Right before Vtec?

There's nothing wrong with bringing 1st gear up to redline.

Solo8thgenSI has not found ths yet, but I drive his car A lot and his second sucks. Its hard to get into at low speeds and its annoying while granny shifting, at 4,500 rpms its just awful to feel it go in, b/c its not a smooth transition. I have not heard it grind, but its just hard to get in and out of!

I also have the problem shifting my 07 si into 2nd anytime im over 7200 rpms. When i try to get it to go in at high rpm it won't go in the gear and will just make a grinding noise and will wait till im about 4000 rpm to let it go in gear. But under normal driving i've never had a problem with 2nd gear. Plus my 3rd gear has trouble going into gear as well, especially when the motor is still cold. Although 3rd never "pops" out or grinds.

Unfortunately, not really. Do a search for 2nd gear or 3rd gear and you will find MANY people with the same problem. Best advice is to take it to the dealer and if they don't fix it change your fluid to something good which should help a bit, but prob won't fix anything.

If you take it to the dealer they won't fix 2nd, they will prob tell you that you are beating on the car or driving it excessively hard causing it to f*ck up.

lol wow dude go play in traffic. were talking about when your getting on it a bit.

god your stupid. no one shifts at redline every shift.
normal shifting is 3000- 3500. but when giving it all its got i would expect it to not grind either. otherwise why design it to run that high.

i'd love to see you run at the track.

"why can't i do better then 22 second quarter mile.. im shifting at 3500 and everything!.. im sure im a great standard driver.. ..

Drive error, tested by bizzybearfijiblue:

Good shift into 2nd at high rpms;
YouTube - 2006 FBP Si 1st - 2nd shift

bad shift into 2nd at high rpms;
YouTube - 2006 FBP Si 1st - 2nd shift (grind)

I will say this:

I agree that most of the time it is driver error for the 1-2. I thought my RSX-S had a 2nd gear grind when I got it cause I couldnt take first to the redline and shift into 2nd without a lil crunch.

As I learned how to drive the car better and got more used to the shifter, I realized that it was just me and that I could make a smooth shift (or a crunchy shift for that matter) from 1-2 3-4 or 4-6 depending on how hard I tried.

why would this car even have vtec if you were SUPPOSED to shift at 3k... this car is meant to rev high and if it can't handle that, honda messed up somewhere. now take your granny shifting outa here

Does not apply to a car that can rev to 8000RPM and has little bottom end torque (I.E. SI). And if you do drive an SI like that your missing out on the best part of the car!

On the contrary, you haven't got a clue how to drive the Civic Si, or how Honda engineered the car.

i-vtec changes its cam profile at 6000 RPM, its peak power of 197hp made at 7800 RPM. Max torque comes at 6200RPM. If you're not revving to 6-8000, you're wasting the car.
