Pinging when using regular fuel

Ok, i am getting pinging under medium load in my R18. Whenever i floor it in a high gear i hear it, and whenever i stab the throttle real quick i hear it. Its starting to get annoying, anyone else get this too?
I have a feeling honda was a little over optimistic when they recomended reg fuel with a 10.5:1 compression motor.
I think this is one of the times that higher octane WILL benifit greatly.
thanks guys

You should be fine running regular fuel, try a tank of premium if you want, wouldn't hurt. I suggest taking it to the dealer if it is pinning on regular fuel, not a good sign. You could have gotten a tank of bad gas as well. If nothing changes, follow the yellow brick road (dealer).

you shouldn't have any problems...take it to the dealer..

have you noticed this on multiple tanks? or just this one tank?

could be a bad tank of gas..

+1 for a tank of bad fuel. Chase it down with a bottle of Octane booster, or try fueling up somewhere else then take it to the dealer if problem isn't resolved.

My car has done this forever. It is so annoying, everything you described is the same as mine, its so audible. The other day it backfired through the intake, I am not sure whats up. This throttle response is so slow. It seems like it takes forever to go from 1500 to 4500rpm. The car really feels like its pulling ignition timing, and that would make sense to the octane claim, btw, last time i used premium for one tank I am not sure if it really made a difference.

Yah are you guys sure you arent hearing it, you gotta turn off the stereo for this one, helps to open the window and go drive somewhere not noisy, up hill if possible.
then put it in a high gear, eg. 4th or 5th and coast then gas it fully, lagging the engine.
It pings for about .5 seconds to 1 second before either the timing is changed by the computer, or the engine revs come up higher.
It sounds like when you manually advance the timing too much on a car, if anyone has done that before.
I think its normal for this engine, but just want to hear it from honda.
