Should I worry?

SHORT VERSION: Steering rack and tie rods will be replaced in a few days under warranty. Should I worry about reliability in the long run?

LONG VERSION: I brought my car to Honda for oil change last saturday, and they told me that it's time for minor service, as I already have 11k miles. So I told them to go ahead and do so, but also check the steering, as it makes a squeeking sound when I turn the wheel in either direction -- very noticeable when parking (or getting out of).

When I came back to pick up my car, they informed me that they confirmed what I was experiencing and have already ordered the parts to replace the steering rack and tie rods. They'll call me Tuesday or Wednesday.

While I'm glad that I have warranty, I'm somewhat worried about the durability of the car, seeing as the car is only a yr old and a little over 11k on mileage. Prior to this I've always thought I was lucky as I only experience the 3rd gear issue once a month, maybe even less, despite using the car daily. Now I suddenly experienced a paradigm shift

I love my car and will keep it, but as soon as another significant issue pops out, I'll consider fixing (under warranty) and selling. It's too bad as one of the main reasons I bought it was it being a Honda and therefore something I can happily keep for at least 10 years (my previous '93 hatch with 140k miles still going strong, same with my sister's '91 accord with 190k+, and gf's '05 civic ex sedan).

On a somewhat related note, I checked out 3 cars this weekend, though did not test drive any.

'08 accord coupe - very nice interior for a car of its price range. clutch felt very soft compared to the Si. Seemed to not have much headroom, but most likely the seat needs to adjusted lower for taller folks - not an issue for me as I'm only 5'6'' haha.

evo X - interior is very blah. regardless of how they market the car, all your $$ is really going to the performance and exterior.

'08 G37 - I really love the luxurious interior, but the sticker price of $42k++ means several hours of negotiation.

As far as replacing the steering rack and tie rods, I wouldn't be too worried about their reliability after they're replaced. Those parts should last about 100k miles, probably was just a fluke that they needed to be replaced. Your choice though. Good luck.

I definitely hope that it is just a fluke. I don't want to end up missing my Si everytime I see an 8th gen on the street.

Oh, Honda called today and they said the parts are there, I just need to bring my car over

new OEM parts, I would not worry about a thing.

As they were about to remove the subframe to put the new parts, they found a loose bracket (or was it brace?). They tightened it up and that fixed the issue.

Got my car back! The steering wheel feels somewhat softer now, but still equally responsive

I did ask one of the guys there that does oil changes and assists the techs for "more advanced stuff", and he mentioned that this is the only common issue they've seen so far with the Si's.

If you are planning on selling your car, do so now before the bad fame of 3rd gear spreads and no body would buy it later... If my car gives me another problem, I will probably sell it, and save money to get an EVO 8 or something.

Nope, not planning on selling, unless another issue pops out. Fortunately I rarely get the 3rd gear grind, which might just be a user error

Now is the time to do it if you are considering. I got rid of mine 3 months ago and Honda dealers didn't even want it since they already had multiple used Si's on the lot.

Actually they didn't want it. I'm sure they would have taken it if I let them give me 13k for an 07 but instead of wasting my time and theirs with low offers they said they didn't want it and pointed to the used Si's. If no ones buying them, why buy more? Believe me, I was god damn dissapointed when driving to dealers that day. Don't believe me still and don't think I ever had an Si? I don't care, I wish I never did have one then I'd have more money and I'd have a place of my own.
