going 58 mph and dropping into 3rd

tonight i was driving 58 mph, and dropped 3rd gear to get ahead of someone. the car jerked a lot and poped me back a lot.

is it okay to drop 3rd going 58mph?

On my last civic 99 ex which is a 5 spd, never felt this before.

you think the big jerk i got was from having a motor with more torque on this motor?

Thanks

you should rev match befor you shift down . . . when you have it in neutral blip the throttle and put it in 3 while the needle is up in the rpms and you wont get the jerking but BE EXTREMELY CAREFLU not to miss shiftand not to do it while your going to fast

don't mean to sound like an ass, but it sounds like you didn't rev match when you downshifted, which would've caused a jerking motion as you described.

umm, yea i think it is ok, i'm almost positive 3rd goes higher than 58mph. i think its like in the 60s or something like that. and for what you felt, well, it was juss everything shifting and moving around cause redline for 3rd is close in that area so you went from not in to being in very quickly, plus stepping on gas pedal and there you have your torque and power since like i said, your in . but all in all, i think your ok, although i wouldnt drop it like that going so fast all the time though. something will eventually give.

he broke it down well but the numbers are off a bit... 3rd gear goes to about 84mph stock... since the limit in 2nd is 57mph switching to 3rd @ 58mph will leave the rpms landing aroung 6k which is just above ... other than that his explanation sounds good

Shit, I do that all the time. 6th at 50, drop to 5th, drop to 4th, drop to 3rd...and go! Well, not *all* the time, but there's an itch to be scratched!

To the OP, you're fine. I'm assuming you either under-revved or over-revved. What gear were you going from? at about 58mph, your engine should be spinning at around 5800-ish before you release your clutch, IIRC. It's around that 5800-6200 mark. You either were at 7k (which I doubt) and released it, or you were lower than 5000, which caused the engine to lurch because the transmission and the engine had to balance out.

damn.... this is shits weird.... i remember going to 84-85 in third...but the tach was pointing beyond 8500 rpms .... while upshifting ofcourse

i went for an oil change...and the dealer did some mandatory maintenance .... ever since that, I can never go past 8200..... really weird.
