what is the black strip on the moonroof?

on the lastest gen hondas, when the moonroof is open, there is a black strip with trapezoid shaped bumps that stick out. I can't think of any purpose that this would serve besides giving you a visual cue that the moonroof is open (from the outside). I've also seen this on some american brand suv (forgot which one).

I'm pretty sure its there to divert the air flow over the top of the car. It doesn't have quite the suction when its up. Next time you are in your car, reach up there and pull it down (its spring-loaded) and note the change in wind in the cabin.

Its to prevent the "boom effect" from happening. People may call it different things, but yeah thats what its for.

ah...i see, i first saw them in the 8th gen civics, then the new cr-vs. so i thought they were a new thing. i'll have to try the wind deflection thing tomorrow, but one thing i've noticed is that wind can enter the car with the moonroof open. this is not so in our 03 cr-v, the only way to make wind come through the moonroof is to stick your hand out of it and deflect wind down. maybe it's the say the car is designed.

I know my Jetta had it and my G6 GT had a little cloth thing that only stopped the wind buffeting sometimes.

Its like everyone said a wind deflector some cars dont need em most cars do need it. Otherwise you'd have a lot of turbulence in the car with it open.

I can confirm that the 07/08 CR-V have them, and they do help the wind buffeting into the back seat.

My brother's RSX also has it.

so today i tried pulling down on the strip and noticed increase wind buffeting noise. however, the amount of wind entering the car actually decreased slightly. our 03 cr-v doesn't suffer from any wind buffeting from the moonroof so i guess that's why it doesn't have it.
