hydrolocking?

HAS anybody here honestly ever hydrolocked their car from the rain because their CAI sucked too much water??? i know that most companies like injen make the hydroguard to prevent this....but honestly. anybody really hydrolocked because of their intake????? shouldn't the underbody mudguard and all that covering be enough to protect your intake?? anybody with a real life story?

You should be fine as long as you use your head while driving. Lots of posts on this, search around and you'll find more than enough info.

The hydro shields stop moisture not water. The body only helps so much. Once you drive into a deep eneough puddle your done. I think theirs like 3 people who have hydrolocked their car.

It can and does happen. The hydroshield is designed to stop larger dust and sand particles, and the occasional water droplets. It does not prevent submersion from puddles.

Isn't there a mod with a cutoff valve right next to the intake manifold that automatically starts sucking air from there instead of the intake when the intake is submerged in water? Or is that what hydroshield is and doesn't really work like that?

yeah a bypass valve, but it must be before your maf...most cai's put the maf far down the intake tube...

Hydroshield is literally a meshed looking cap that goes over your filter. It servers to lessen the amount of dirt your filter comes in contact with, thus prolonging service life. It also wicks off water droplets.

A water bypass valve, is a plastic device that is inserted somewhere along the intake tract. The plastic flaps lining the inner cage is literally sucked open via vaccum during conditions where the filter is submerged.

Google AEM bypass valve for more info. I recall the owner of AEM being jittery when Sport Compact car tested the Bypass valve on his NSX. :P

a compressor by pass valve is for turbo vehicles only, and should not be confused with the above.

Are bypass valves not really reliable or something?

yes and no. the filter must be fully submerged in water for it to work. if its only half way then the bypass valve will do nothing for you. i dont have one on my car because i am really careful and try not to drive the car in the rain.
