Oh just to make sure the record is straight.. I religiously have and will use 93 always.. problem is there's NONE.. I'd pay $6/gal now if were around.. BUT.. it's very very very hit or miss.. basically rumors of this or that station having some after a tanker filled, then ran out.

It's like the 70's crunch without the peanut farmer and old P.O.S. 4-ton buicks with v-8's that wouldn't get out of their own way. Idiots fighting at the pumps.

I may have to take a few days off and park the silly thing.. An STI owner I work with and I were both contemplating a rental just to get us through this BS.

I'm thinking of a stratagy of cruising a bit very late tonight to see if I can catch something. One good fillup.. just one little 93octane fix.. that's all I need.. gotta find me a petroleum-pusher that can supply.. startin' to feel the jitters.

Finally! I was able to fill up with 93 last night late. :) yay! Only about a 2-hour wait in line. That's how nuts it is here. The word is the contracted "brand" stations are getting some tanks but the indy stations are being driven into the dirt.. No accident I'd say. I got gassed at a shell station. Running great on full... for now. Not being completely positive what I got was infact premium, I did add about 1/3 bottle of NOs brand booster. Hopefully we're seeing the worst of it. It's apparently just up here in Asheville.. The drive up the mountain isn't as profitable as filling the SC stations near the line from Mississippi.

Greensboro and Winston-Salem NC are operating normally. High prices but most places have all grades. Wish I could share the wealth

Seeing maybe one or two different stations open this morning. Talked to the guy where I filled up this morning, states they're getting consistent shipments in at night.. I'll be visiting tonight in the wife's car now. I've made some royally world-class decisions in my life, but buying two premium fuel cars is right up there I think. :) At least they both get better than 25mpg real world.

basic story: if you can't afford premium gas you shouldn't drive a Si, if you have no choice but to fill up 87 its ok once in a while but in the long run you are gonna mess up your car from engine knocking and other things

i live in vancouver and i dont kno wat the actual difference is between canada and the states in terms of prices, but i would only save $7 per tank filling in regular (87 octane) as compared to supreme plus (94 octane). i could save approx $1.5 by filling in supreme (92 octane) but i decided to get 94 as it is the best bang for my buck

You have 94 octane fuel up there? You luck SOB. We used to have Sunoco Ultra 94 but they took it away from us. I wish I had 94 so bad now that I'm turbo. That would be awesome. I would pay the extra couple dollars for that fuel. I could probably get away with running an extra degree of timing with that fuel. But at least I'm not in CA where they only have that swamp premium unleaded. They only have 91 octane, right? I'm having another brain fart. lol...Is it 91 or 92 in CA?

No prob affording it.. In our little pocket here, we're having lines at the pumps at the few stations that have ANY gas. It's worse than the 70's crunch.

Just now beginning to ease up with the supply issues.

Most gas stations still have plenty of fuel in the tanks, but they have used all their ration for the day. Gas stations aren't stupid. They don't drain their tanks. They would be risking a serious crisis if they couldn't get gas for a couple of weeks. They do have enough to sell per day until the next tankers roll in. The best thing to do is to not panic like everyone is doing, and try to fuel at less convenient times. On the way to and from work are very bad times. Everyone wants to get it and go. Go on a late lunch break or something. Most stations will temporarily shut down also to prevent overcrowding and traffic problems. As they all stick together and price gouge all of us, they've already thought of the issues we're facing now. They just want you to think that they're doing as much as they can for you, as you're getting scrooed.

FYI, I stopped by a gas station close to home (near Asheville) that was selling from one pump only. Naturally I thought it would be 87, but when I asked where I could get some premium I was told that was what they were actually selling. Moral of the story: Ask don't assume.

Indeed.. similar answer I got. Stated to me by one guy that typically if anything was not as marked, it would be premium fuel in the regular tank.. erring on the side of better octane. However, I'd hate to inadvertently put 93 in a big $10k Toro mower designed for regular. Heard 1st hand that will kill one quick.

Hmm...after reading through 5 pages of debates back and forth between 87 and 93....would it hurt to just put 93 sometimes and 87/89???

Here in MA Mobile has 87 / 89 / 93 those are the standards for all the gas stations here except for like Shell and Sunoco which has 87 / 89 / 91 / 93 (more choices lol)

But when I first got my car the dealership filled up my tank and left the receipt in the car when i went to pick it up and i saw it [REGULAR] i was like wtf premium only!!! but it seems i was able to get better mpg with 87 than i did with 93??? can someone elaborate on this situation??

^ i always thought that higher octane burnt faster = less mpg.
i use 91 from shell everytime i fill up. i used chevron once.

I use Shell V-power 93. I get 33 MPG in my Si sedan. Won't go anywhere else if I can help it. As for the "regular" burning more efficiently than the premium...maybe a fluke or the new engine breaking in. Higher octane mixes oxygen and fuel better, burning quicker with less heat, making it more efficient. It simply transfers more explosion to motion rather than heat. Mathematically 87 can not be more efficient than 93. The only difference may be the computer controlled Air to fuel ratio burning the "regular" really lean, using less fuel per cycle saving gas - hence the fluke/break-in comment.

No, running 93 occasionally and using 87 mostly is not a good idea. Why risk detonation? Might as well super glue the accelerator to the floor and use the ignition switch to stop yourself. It will be the same wear on the engine as slamming the rev-limiter. Detonation is detonation. Engine runs too hot in the combustion chamber and forces something the wrong way. Simple as that. DO THE MATH.

93 burns slower then 91 and that burns slower then 89 and that burns slower then 87
This slower burn is what helps prevents detenation when you have a higher compression
Engine
The only advantage you get from running 93 vs 87 is you spark timing is able to advance more which help give you a little bit more power
