Ever wonder whats in an oil filter?

Honda Oil Filter:

It's a conventional style oil filter and its reccomended for Honda's since it is an OE filter. It's internals consist of an oil port, check valve, paper element and a pressure relief valve. This does more than sufice as a Oil filter and honda doesn't even reccomend changing it at every oil change.
average cost: $6.95

Fram tough gaurd:

It's internals consist of an oil port, check valve, paper element and a pressure relief valve. It does have a difference. Note: paper element is more tightly nit and has more surface area for better filtering of oil. This filter exceeds the OEM Honda Filter. It also has a better sealing surface the seal is flat and alows for more sealing surface.
And now for the cool part. It has a screen at the base of the filter that blocks any large particles from getting int the engine.
average cost: $9.00

Mugen OIl filter:

Now for the dissapointment.....My very first oil change I used a Mugen oil filter on my honda at 5,000miles.I also switched to Mobil 1. If you look at the filter the check valve is smaller wich alows oil to recede back into the pan faster and causes oil to come out of filter which means when you start it for the first few nano seconds there is no oil to lubricate the engine. (This is when the most engine wear takes place) The box says that it has better flow well yes it does.
Anouther dissapointment...the filter element is alot smaller wich means less surface area to filter oil hence the reason for better flow not only that its the same style they use in small gas enigines like in mopeds or gocarts. not only that the pressure relief valve is so small that it it's self can get clogged causing no oil flow to engine.
To make matters worse the filter leaked all over my subframe and I lost over a quart of oil. I ended up switching it back to the OE filter. I didn't even bother trying to get my money back I was so upset over the matter I decided to do this info thread instead.
avarage cost $40.00 (shipping included)

Bottom Line: Just because something costs more money doesn't mean its better....

As for me I will be using the Fram filter from now on because it has better internals.

Hope this thread shed some light on any thoughts about using the correct oil filter.....

Next 3 pix are a close up of the filters used in Info Thread...

propped you!

How about the regular fram filters? The orange ones. I think the "tough gaurd" is fram's higher model.

1. orange fram will be the same inside as OEM filter along with the WIX as well...

2. I am after the high end stuff...
3. I will try purolator pure one, mobil one, and K&N....
4. Many filters are made by the same manufacturer then sent to have different labels put on them....

the best oil filter price to spend is around 6-15 $ anything more than that and it better do more than just filter oil.....

+1 rep for you. Great work & post! I decided to stick with Honda's filters for now as I'm getting them six at a time for a great discount, plus I got Hondacare's 120K mile warranty.
