Wow!!!!!

So I was driving back from dinner tonight with my friends. Earlier that day I had been with my friend in a parking lot trying to teach him how to drive manual. He had asked me if I could start from a complete stop in 2nd. I said I didn't know so I tried and it was pretty easy. Flash forward to later that day, we are pulling into the parking lot and same friend says "I bet you can't start it from a dead stop in 6th. So I try and move about 8 feet then stop cause I realized I would need alot more room to let the clutch go all the way out. At that point I start smelling something that really offends my nostrils. It smelt like burnt something. Did I melt my clutch or something like that.
Is trying to start in 6th a terrible idea? Obviously not practical at all, but could it hurt anything?
Any ideas as to what that smell was from if not the clutch. No smoke, just smell.
Thanks

So "burning" your clutch isn't like a never going to work again deal?

it will definitely continue to work for many more thousands of miles

it's not good for your clutch to slip it that much....as long as you don't make a habit of it you should be fine

Alright, I only tried for like 6 seconds, so hopefully it didn't do anything. I don't suggest trying to start in 6th though

Thanks for all the input.

To all those who just made fun of me and didn't do anything at all, I'm sorry that you feel it necessary to say those things and I hope in the future you won't be mean to other people and make them feel bad about themselves. Your posts detract from 8thcivic as a forum and I hope others in the future won't leave because of your immaturity.

Again, don't get me wrong, I know it was a stupid thing to do. I just don't see why people had to kick me while I was down.

hmm... all "nasty" posts must have been deleted cuz all i see is underexageration...

I would say that starting in anything above second is a horrable idea, it makes your clutch heat up tramendusly, and this warps your flywheel and can cause a noticable vibration while driving or you can damage a seal and cause oil leaks...

the main cause of clutch failure is excessive heat, this can cause your friction plates to crack or or shatter...

please dont ever ever start in anything over 2nd EVER!!!! because you might aswell apply the hand break put it in 4th and slowle release the clutch pedal while holding the gas and brake PEGGED... it will acomplish the same thing...

but on a plus its nice to know what a car will or wont do...

next step, burn out... rev to 4000 rpm, place the car in 1sf, pop the clutch and let it rip... for added effect you can apply the hand brake and quickly shift it into 2nd when the rev limmiter is reached, then hold the revs at around 7500-8000rpm

lesson 3... ebrake slides...

there is no such thing!!!, you can put it in any gear from a dead stop, you can run through all gears..., then once you get over like 20km/h then reverse gets blocked and if you read your manual you'd know that if your at a stop and your reverse is blocked then you have to engage first ot second at a dead stop then reverse gets opend up...

I was stuck in traffic for 1 hour so i read the whole thing
