+1 for Mobil 1, but I'm going to try Amsoil for my Si when I get first oil change done.

Mobil 1 5w30 for K20/5w20 for R18 is a good balance of cost/quality.

Castrol Syntec is another alternative, if you have problems finding Mobil1.

The problem is that the only Castrol Syntec that is a true Synthetic oil is the German made stuff in the 0W-30 weight. Everything else is just a hydrocracked crude.

On my 2nd oil change at 9k, I'm using Amsoil ASL 5W-30, Amsoil Ea0 Oil Filter, and Amsoil MTF 10W-30 Transmission Oil.

Today, I got my second oil change at 9.2k miles. I used Amsoil ASL 5W-30 with a Amsoil EA0 filter. Runs pretty smooth. Can't wait to see if I actually gets better gas mileage. While I was at it, I changed the the tranny fluid to Amsoil MTF. Not that I was complaining about any 3rd gear grinds, but it does seem shift and run smooth. Rotated tires, too. I'll let you know in a few hundred miles my gas mileage results. Currently getting 27 28 MPG.

I was buying Mobil 1 synthetic for my first oil change so I can change it myself and the guy at the auto parts was like "Ehhh......that oil is over rated. You should get some Castrol. There were these experiments done showing that Castrol was better blahblahblah"

It was so funny. I smelled so much BS. I'm guessing there was some sort of extra commission on the Castrol oils that day.

I told him to zip it and ring my damn oil up. =)

Any improvements in fuel economy are likely to be either from the continued loosing up of your engine and/or from differences in how you drive. Folks have been "claiming" for decades now that synthetic oil improves fuel economy, however, I am a member of the S.A.E. (and browse their archives for stuff like this) and to date I've yet to see any verifiable scientific evidence to suggest that synthetic oil will improve fuel economy at all (assuming like for like oil grades in the comparison).

To the best of my knowledge, the only manufacturer of synthetic oil that claims (or has claimed) that their synthetic oil will improve fuel economy is Amsoil, and given all of their other silly marketing claims, that just further dilutes any credibility that their marketing department might have.

FWIW, I've been religious about tracking the mileage of all of my cars purchased since the mid 1980s, and in every case, they've continued to improve in the fuel economy department up through the 100,000 mile mark (albeit ever so gradually). At the extreme, last summer one of our vans returned the best mileage it had ever gotten on a single tank of gas, and it had ~145,000 miles on it at the time. Go figure.

Good job, plus rep. The ONLY Castrol that rivals Mobil 1 is the German made (says "Made in Germany" right on the label) Castrol Syntec 0W-30, all other grades are Group III hydrocracked crude oil based.

.
Have you looked at Elf CRV oils with the 506.01 VAG ratings? Or other syn oil that have a high moly additive package?

Mobil1 is the most cost effective synthetic oil. However your civic engine with cheap dino oil will outlast the tranny, body, and other mechanical parts.

Honda engines like most modern engines are designed to last over 200k miles with normal oil.
