Unhappy I can't figure out how to get the trunk liner off

2007 FA5, I was going to pull the rigid trunk liner on the inside bottom of the trunk deck lid to install some LED License plate bulbs.

I tried getting the plugs off with the Phillips head screw indentation in them and I can't figure it out. If I put something beneath the plug I can pry it out 1/4" or so, but then I can't get it out. Actually using a phillips head screwdriver doesn't do anything it seems. Tried applying a good amount of pressure on the screwdriver then turning, still nothing.

I also tried getting the regular plugs out nearest to the rear window (without the Phillips head) and I can't remove those either. I am prying pretty hard with a flathead screwdriver and a chisel.

Please someone tell me what I am doing wrong so I don't feel quite a stupid.

I don't know what that very vague reply is supposed to mean.

ok sorry i had to go...

what i ment was that the center part unscrews out from the outside and that retracts two tangs in the middle, when you press hard the center part is forced into its housing and doesnt move, its a butterfly clip, when the center comes out it retracts and when the center is screwed in it spreads the clip out. what you need to do is unscrew it gently and not apply any force toward it, its only plastic threads and they fo strip...

with you finger nail you can get under the part that unscrews and you can force it toward yourselt while uncrewing...

and remember rightie-tightie and leftie-loosie....

Ok, I will try to get my flathead underneath of the plastic head and then unscrew without applying pressure.

Thanks!

Well I stripped out the two I was screwin' around with before I asked you all. I was able to get them all out and back in successfully, but I will probably replace the two I stripped down the road. Thanks again!
