Question Disable TPMS for '08 Civic

I'm looking at getting a set of snow tires and new rims for the winter time. I'm not planning on getting the sensors (low on funds), but don't want that annoying "tpms" light on the whole winter. Does pulling the fuse disable that light also? Thanks.

Why don't you try it?

According to the manual. You will NEVER be able to turn off the VSA with the TPMS on.

i believe the tpms is just behind the rim = on the valve stem

if you get winter tires + rims there shouldn't be any TPMS.

someone else can verify but my impression was it that's how it works from college hills

yes, that is what he is saying

the TMPS warning light will come on in the dash if there are no TPMS sensors in the wheels

TS wants to know a way to bypass this.

You have 3 choices, TS, deal with the warning light (and apparently not being able to turn VSA off), buy new sensors for your new wheels or transfer your sensors from your stock wheels over to the new ones.

if no other way there is one option- dismount the spare and throw all the sensors from the stock wheels inside the spare tire and reinflate it- keep the pressure at 34psi and ur good

edit: just thought about it and if your gonna go through all the work just put them on the new wheels

More than likely you'll be able to use a strap kit to install the TPMS sensors.

Not sure if this is what you were talking about as far as a strap kit but it is something interesting I found on my search!

Also good info from Acuraworld:

Quote:
Starting in September 2007 all vehicles sold in the US will have a Tire pressure monitoring system has standard equipment. The Tire Racks product support team has asked me to post the following information in an effort to start educating the public about this impending change now and discuss what that will mean when buying aftermarket wheels.

Acura/Honda

An Update on Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems and Aftermarket Wheels

A direct tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) will be standard equipment on every vehicle sold in the U.S. after September, 2007. The criteria for TPMS standardization is that the vehicle must have only four wheels (no dual-wheeled trucks or motorcycles), and weigh less than 10,000 lbs.

Many Hondas and Acuras already have direct valve sensor systems (see TPMS Facts below). For example, recent years of the MDX, RL, TL, Odyssey, Pilot, and Ridgeline have TPMS valve sensors as either an option or as standard equipment. 2007 models designed with TPMS will be the RDX, TSX, CR-V, and the Element. Honda/Acura valve sensors are currently being produced by TRW and Pacific. The Tire Rack has sensors for all vehicles through the 2006 model year. Some are slightly larger then the common sensor size. The size can limit the number of wheels available for TPMS-equipped vehicles, but wheel manufacturers are aware of the issue and are rushing to get most of their wheels TPMS-compatible.

The Tire Rack's fitment specialists have carefully determined which wheels that are currently available will be compatible with the system installed on your vehicle.

: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :

If you have any questions about the wheel you're considering, call or post your question for confirmation that it will be compatible with your TPMS.

: : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : :

TPMS Facts

Direct TPMS use a sensor in the wheel/tire to wirelessly relay pressure back to the driver via a display inside the vehicle. Some vehicles have a digital screen that continuously shows all four tire pressures (five if spare has sensor). Others simply flash a "low tire pressure" light on the dash. Additionally, there are two different styles of sensors for a direct system: a valve sensor and a strap/band sensor. Only valve sensors are used on Honda/Acura direct system-equipped vehicles. If you bought an aftermarket SmarTire TPMS, its sensors are held on by a strap around the barrel of the wheel.

Indirect systems work in conjunction with the ABS wheel speed sensors that “count” the number of revolutions of each tire. If the right front tire is low (25psi) it will spin faster than the left front tire (35psi). The ABS system will recognize this change and alert the driver with a flashing light and possibly a loud chime. Although no current model Honda or Acura has an indirect TPMS, it is helpful to understand this important difference -- indirect systems do not affect the fitment of aftermarket wheels.
sorry if it's a repost, just trying to share the information with those who may not know.

(hence, my post above from g35driver would NOT work on our hondas since we have the valve-style sensor... right?...)

So if these work on a system that sends a signal from each tire to the ecu and throws a light if the pressure is not correct, why can't someone develop 4 small "sensors" that don't sense anything but send a signal to the ecu saying "all's well!"... then we can go back to the ol tire-gauge-in-the-glovebox method.

Just buy Honda wheels (from a DX or something)for your winters, break the bead on your Si rims, pull the sensors out, and put them on the winter wheels. Then put them back in the summer. No reprogramming or anything.

I do this on the Ridgeline that I drive at work, I rock stock wheels in the winter and chrome MDX 19's in the summer...

So is it basically you can transfer the sensor from stock to the aftermarket wheels and that should do it or is there aftermarket wheels out there that would take the TPMS? Also, anyone know the brand for the 08 civic TPMS?

I just bought a set of winter tires from tirerack with new sensors installed. My TPMS sensor light went on. Will be bringing it to the dealership tomorrow morning to get it reset to the new sensors. Hopefully they will show me how to do it myself so I don't have to keep bringing my car to the dealership to get sensors reset. From what I read so far, the sensor in the car can only remember a set of four sensors...

probably true... otherwise if you pulled up next to another car with other sensors and it recognized one of them, it would think it sprouted 4 new wheels and just imagine vtec then...

that made me LOL!

kngo28: Did you get a different brand for the sensor? Let us know how that works. Trying to look for new wheels and I'm having a hard time because of this TMPS...
