Trunk problems (i.e. leaks & can't be unlocked)

Just wondering if anyone else has had these problems:

1. I have locked my trunk with the key from inside the car, and now, even when using the key to unlock it, the lever that one would normally pull to open the trunk from inside the car can't be lifted. The only way to open the trunk is using the key.

2. Today it was pouring rain outside and when I got to work I realized that the bag I had left in the trunk was soaking wet. The whole left side of the trunk carpet is soaked in water and I am not sure if it's a leak from somewhere above the trunk or if there is a hole below somewhere.

I have scheduled an appointment with Honda for this coming Saturday, but I was wondering if anyone else experienced these problems.

Have you checked to see if there is any weather stripping bent causing pressure on the release cable and causing the leak?

There's a drain tube for your moonroof that is on the left side of the trunk. It probably leaked. Pull carpet and the spare tire lid, and the side trim, possible the rear trim. Look for a clear tube that has come loose from the drain valve.

(Or take it in for service.)

1.: RC(rear compartment) lock not set right, or there might be a "pocket bolt" holding the lock back. Use your key and lock and unlock your RC lock, see if that breaks it loose.

2.: I agree with Mr bill its prob. your sunroof drain tube.

Hope it gets fixed.

OK, well just wanted to update everyone on this.

1. The locking of the trunk apparently is due to a malfunctioning release mechanism or something like that. The dealer ordered the part and will have it installed in 2 weeks. For now they unlocked the trunk for me and told me not to lock it from inside the car until they change the faulty part.

2. Dealership could not find the cause of the leak, but when I'll go in to replace the trunk release mechanism, they will have me talk to a "leak specialist" who will come in especially to check this problem out.

For now all I have to do is pray that it won't rain too hard. I will also look into that sunroof drain tube to see if maybe that's the problem.

Thank you all for your replies.

Just hose the car down with water and repeat the problem for them. It should NOT be hard to find a leak.

That's the problem though, it doesn't happen when I wash the car. It only happens when I drive the car in the rain.

use a spray nozzle that makes a stream that looks similar to rain, and spray between the trunk and bumper areas well as the sidepannel and trunk. If that doesn't get it then spray the rear glass, maybe it is leaking through the channel. Places to focus in on are the points of the trunk for missing sealer, a pinhole would be enough to let in a little water. If you got an air compressor then spray soapy water all over the trunk and then blow it with air the soap will leave bubbles in the trunk where it is leaking. Kind of like checking a tire but in reverse.

The "leak specialist" is prob. their detailer. When I bought my last used car, It was a toss up between two cars. One just got back from the detailer. I lifted the tire cover, and found 2 inches of water...I bought the other one. It would prob. be a good idea to do tests so that after they fix it you can check their work. Not saying that they would miss it or anything.

Just a thought, the Civics have vents in the lower sides of the trunk that vent air from behind the bumper. Its possible that water may have been splashed up into one of the vents.

There would only be an inch of water down in the well at the most. Usually when the carpet is wet, it's from above. Either a trunk seal, cracked sealer, or drain tube.

BTW any update?

As a matter of fact yes.

The "leak specialist" was actually a guy from a different company, not affiliated with Honda. All the guy does is fixes leaks in cars. He seemed very knowledgeable and found the leak problem in no time. Apparently there were 3 hair like cracks in the seal of the trunk, which Honda fixed at no charge.

In addition, they replaced the trunk release mechanism because the old one would stay locked once you would lock it from inside the car.

It hasn't rained since they fixed the trunk problem, but it's supposed to rain on Thursday so I will let you know if the problem was solved or not. So far I have to say that I am pleased with how Honda handled the problem.

I figured that that had to be it! Glad to hear there wasn't much fuss.
