does my car remember what I've done?

I've been searching for an hour for a thread that I read but couldn't find it so I'm resorting to making a new post. I read in a post that the ecu? has some sort of memory that can recall how I've driven the car (rpms etc.) in the last 'x' amount of miles. Is this true and if so how many miles back does it remember?

Yes, indeed it does have a memory. It's like the "black box" they have in airplanes. I'm not quite sure how many miles back it records.

It won't record every single time you say hit "redline" but it will save the highest RPM spike.

Really not sure how long it saves it but probably untill you go above the last highest RPM recorded.

It's like a very limited black box. The ECU records everything you've done recently. Not sure how long it records up to, but I can tell you that it's at least 3 weeks of recorded time. Once I mis-shifted in my dc5. Three weeks later my motor blew because I had some bent pistons that gave in. They ran a diagnostics and told me that I had rev'd it to 10k a few weeks back. I was like but luckily Honda replaced the motor for me for free.

You actually have two things that record on your car. The computer remembers all the engine stuff for about a couple weeks.

Then there is the EDR used to prosecute you if you involved in a bad accident with deaths and were at fault. This had been used in the past to send people to jail for manslaughter. It can replicate everything you were doing for 30sec to a couple min before the impact. They say (NHTSB) that its soley used to make cars safer by recreating how it acted in a acident. But people have had these recorders used against them in court.

this is right out of your manual

Event Data Recorders
This vehicle is equipped with one or more devices commonly referred to as event data recorders. These devices record front seat belt use, front passenger seat occupancy, airbag deployment data, and the failure of any airbag system component. This data belongs to the vehicle owner and may not be accessed by anyone else except as legally required or with the permission of the vehicle owner.

Service Diagnostic Recorders
This vehicle is equipped with service-related devices that record information about powertrain performance. The data can be used to verify emissions law requirements and/or help technicians diagnose and solve service problems. It may also be combined with data from other sources for research purposes, but it remains confidential and is never linked to the vehicle owner.

So the big picture is "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING"

I think this might be the thread you were looking for.
Can the dealer check to see if you've hit the rev-limiter? *Merged*
