Unhappy HELP: Ticking or Clicking noise (rattle) from passenger side front door area

I have been to Honda 4 or 5 times now trying to diagnose where the hell this noise is coming from. Its a brand new Civic EX sedan. 3000k miles. I have noticed the noise for the past 1k miles at least.

The noise literally sounds like its coming from the front of the passenger side door. It has no rhyme or reason, i cant seem to see a pattern. They checked behind the glove box and nothing is loose. They replaced a motor mount and no dice. Where could this click or tick be coming from? Its not that loud, with the radio on I dont hear it but its so annoying and the car is less that 60 days old and I feel like I am at the end of my rope with trying to get this fixed. Is it in the actual door? In the window? In the strut? I have honestly no idea and neither does Honda so far. It could be plastic? It could be a metal washer? I have no idea.

Any suggestions would be more than appreciated. I am so frustrated.

Since you seem to think it's from the door somewhere, start by removing the door panel to see if it's coming from the door; or get honda to remove it for you, then take it for a spin. You'll have to be creative with the door handle and wiring, but you can disconnect it all for the sake of troubleshooting this thing... then you can peel back the plastic lining and see if there's a dried up old sandwich or apple rollling around in there from a Friday at the assembly line :)

It's sad that I found this link while looking for the fix to the exact same problem. I have an 07 Si coupe, and it seems to be right near the speaker on the front passenger door, mainly on rougher roads. It's like a clicking sound.

I did seem to be able to slightly press against the door while driving and it seemed like it might have helped. I haven't been able to get someone to ride with me to try to diagnose it yet, but i'm sure it is the exact same clicking/ticking as you are hearing.

By the way, my car has just over 3000 miles as well, and I have heard it for like the last 1000 also.

Let me know if you find anything.

Mike C. Its just nice to hear that I am not the only crazy person who is encountering this. I have taken two honda guys out with me and find when someone is sitting in the passenger side the sound is less frequent, as if the weight of them being there changes things? Or am I just insane... which is what i think the service people are starting to think.

Its not the motor mounts. I can assure you of that. They are going to try and change them on your car but dont let them. They tried that on mine and nothing changed. And its not behind the glove box, because they checked there today. I tried holding the window steady and having it down while driving and that didnt help. I am seriously at the end of my rope so if you come to any conclusions please let me know via this thread. Ugh.

I am conviced its either in the wheel (strut?) or in the door itself. I am gonna have to go back to Honda and try again... my fifth trip over this issue.

Hey man are you sure its the door.

I too had a crappy tick/rattle noise that I was almost sure it was the door until i put my head next to the front passenger seat rail mount and pulled up and down on the seat.

All I did was loosen the front seat rail bolts, put some weight on the seat and re-torqued them, noise has been gone for over a month.

Try it out...

I got the same problem and thought it was coming from the door until i also found that when you have a passenger sitting in the seat it goes away. So now im pretty convinced its the seat.
Im gonna try koop's idea out tomorrow (its raining right now) and let u guys know.
oh btw, i have an 06 si with just over 12k and it just started happening after a trip to nyc and boston.

Yea, I'm 99% its gonna work for you. mine started doing it at around 600 miles, I'm at about 2500 now and it hasn't come back!

Oh man... I never even though of the seat but I kept saying over and over to the Honda dealer than when someone is in the car with me the sound is less. I never even thought of the seat, i thought it was weight on the suspecion or something. Man as soon as I get out of work today and messing with that seat. If this works man you are a lifesaver!

yeah, when mine was doing it, it was quieter with my GF next to me..but shes too light to make it stop completely.

yea, loosen those front rail bolts, push down on the seat and crank them down pretty hard (don't strip them).

I dont know much about cars... so I am not really sure what a rail bolt is. I assume its in the track that the seat runs on? Can you point me in the right direction to get this done and see if it works?

Good to hear the problem might be solved.

Just for S&G, try pulling the edge of your front bumper cover away from the car.
Grab the bumper cover @ the fender well about 6 inches below where the top of the bumper cover meets the fender. Pull in and out. If it makes a squeak sound that could very possibly be your problem as well.

My car had a rattle for a bit, but I found it. If it is the bumper cover, take the single screw out and pull the edge of the bumper cover away from the car and reinstall.

Good luck!

I will try this too tonight when i get home. First the seat then check the fender. I feel like the sound is coming from someplace much closer than the bumper though. But its worth a shot.

yea, if you slide the seat all the way back, and look at the floor directly in front of the seat where it bumps up. There are two (i think 12mm maybe 15, memories gone) bolts there that fasten the rails to the chassis. loosen those bad boys, push the seat down, torque em down tight and go for a drive!\

EDIT - hopefully this does it (I think it will) and you don't have to mess with the bumper.

unfortunatly i dont think i am strong enough to loosen those bolts (i am female). i just went out and tried. I need a ratchet set and possibly a strong guy friend to come try this. I might have to bring it into honda just to have them try and do this for me or i could maybe go pick up a ratchet set tomorrow... not a bad thing to have anyway.

I'm sorry I assumed you were using a ratchet. Usually the best way to go

Definitely use a ratchet though, that way you can tighten it nice and snug after loosening it.

Yup I figured I needed a ratchet as soon as I looked down there. I have a friend who has a set, I will get it this weekend and give it a go...

Just found the thread and have been having the same crap from my 07 SI. I will check both ideas...I thought it could have been the lock bar rubbing against the door frame or something of the sorts.
