who goes by oil life? Oil percent, First Oil Change Oil Monititor Threads Merged
so i called honda to get my oil changed (gotta call head office to make the service appointments) and they asked me what percentage my oil life was at. so i told them 40% and they said that i didn't have to change it because it isn't at the "15% you need an oil change mark". so i said " thats ok, its about 7000 kms since my last change and i would like it done" and the girl refused to book me an appointment!! i couldn't believe it. so i was like okay... so i hung up the phone called my b/f and told him about it so he decided to call them and see why they wouldn't. two minutes later a guy called me back from the dealership and he said " i dont know who you talked to, but whoever it was, is an idiot! if you want an oil change ill be glad to do it for you" so if anyone else calls honda and they tell you "im sorry we cant change your oil till the car tells you to" tell them they are full of crap!!
ok! now that i vented and got that off my chest! does anyone go by the oil life thingy mabobber or do you still go by mileage? i like to go by the mileage, i dont trust the oil life thing. IMO |

I follow the meter. Your car senses how you drive and adjusts the meter accordingly. If you do alot of stop and go traffic, hit vtec alot, it will tell you in 3000 miles or so. If you drive moderate, no vtec, it will tell you at 7k for example. Follow the meter. It's there for a reason.
I change mine at 20% because I hate seeing the CEL when it hits 15 and I only run Mobil1 |

http://www.dantheoilman.com/modular.xls The "weighted" values are "how many miles to get 1 ppm of that wear metal." So higher is better. As you can see the majority of the better results are from extended drains. AMSOIL has recommend between 7500, 15k, 25k, and 35k intervals (albeit those last two require some special circumstances) with their oils for years! Originally in the 70s they started and Mobil1 recommended it too! Now even Mobil1 has oils that last 15k. Usually the oil life monitors are pretty accurate (leaning towards safety too) when using an oil that is speced for the motor. They spent a lot of money developing the system and the algorithms. Follow the OLM and you won't have any problems. |

i always go by the meter, it monitors your driving habits so that you change the oil when it needs to be changed. Like 06BlackSi said, it's there for a reason. I used to change my oil every 4-5K in my Saturn, but now is probably every 6K or so by the time it gets down to 15%.

The kind that know and understand that frequent oil changes can be worse than extended oil changes. Intial wear on the first few thousand of miles on the new oil is higher than the later. Proven by used oil anaylis. You can have you oil tested for 20.00 or so and it will show some stunning results for those that think the oil just goes bad at 3k miles. |

I also done a lot of research on this matter, and I have to agree that changing the oil every 3k is like throwing $$$ away. Conventional oils can go longer than 3k miles, synthetics can go even longer. However a good oil filter is mandatory if changing oil more than 3k. Do a search on oil filter review, I started a thread w/ some good info on filters.
Also, it all depends on how you drive the car, if you drive hard, and take it to the track often, than you should change it more frequently. If you baby the car, drive mostly on the highway, than you can go longer. I personally will be using AmsOil and AmsOil filter and will take it from 5-7k miles. Some may say that I can go longer, but I do go racing. Just remember the most important thing is having a proper oil level. If you drive hard the car will burn oil, so keep an eye on the level. I think that most of us will change the oil somewhere around 5k, thats +/- 20% oil life. My $.02 |
