If the rpms were raising while the speeds remained the same. That is a clutch type issue. Either the actuall clutch, pressure plate, or the hydraulic system that works the pressure plate. Typicall in the higher gears and up a hill is when they'll slip.

But not sure why the car isn't running now. Call the dealer.

Tell the dealer that you felt the tranny act weird and a funny smell. You then pulled over and stopped. Do not mention you drove for more miles.

I'm home right now, but they said if it's the clutch, I'm out of pocket. What can I do?

I don't know your age or driving style. But a clutch for normall drivers should last well over 80k miles.

If they won't cover it under the warrenty. Sorta complain and bitch then ask if they can work with you. Sometimes they might cover 1/2 the cost. Honda typically is very very good to there customers, compared to other brands.

If not. Seek a good indepandent mech to save labor cost. And get a good Spec (its a brand) clutch. The once the mech looks at the clutch and says it was bad, get somebody to see if your using the clutch wrong.

They called me and stated that I mis-shifted causing the clutch to go out. I would swear on my kids life's that I have not done this to my car. They offered 10% off which still leaves me at about $1200 owed. I called Honda of America and am waiting on the case manager to call me back. There's no way whatsoever I did this and can not afford to pay this out of pocket. Hell I'll work weekends to pay this off at the dealership if need be.

Mis-shift doesn't cause the clutch disc to burn out. Slipping the clutch, riding the pedal etc etc is what burns up a clutch. I doubt they can tell for sure what happened to the clutch untill its taken apart and a visual inspection is done.

What was the prior signs?

I am now a firm believer that the 8th gen civic is the WORST car honda ever built. Add this to the multiple paint flaws, the folks with the blown si motors, the clunking sounds, the rattles, and you have a pos car with perhaps the most hypocritical warranty in existence. Relish in it!

Is it just for the SI? Because I own a 07 LX and I’ve never had any problems. I guess it is only for the Si MT model??

Have you ever replace a clutch on one of these cars?, How much would you do it for? (parts and labor?)

I'm no expert on the Honda engine/tranny. but I've owned a car with a wore out clutch and it would just slip when under a hard loads in 5th gear. No reason why it will not run or just die while driving. Labor was about 4-500 and then parts. I replaced it again myself just dropped the tranny on my chest and crawled out.

I'd seek a second opinion from another Honda dealership and/or an indepandent mechanic.

Tukai vs. Honda of america, BBB is the referee

Ok I need some help with my case with Honda of america. This has been escalated thru the BBB and we are going to arbitration soon. I will need to state my case that the car had a faulty clutch and I should be reimbursed. My case is that they did not show me any proof that I drove the car to where the clutch would have gone bad. I asked Liz @ honda of america to provide me pictures of the damaged clutch and a copy of the ECU showing my abuse. Neither was given to me. I pleaded with Honda for at least a 50/50 split and they reduced it from 1450+tax to 930 total. If I lose, oh well, I already paid for it. but if I can get my money back, it would be great.

According to the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act, the burden of proof lies with Honda. They must prove to you that you were the cause of the problems and not a faulty part.

I'd keep bitchin and want proof until they give it to me.

That is the theory, the practice is different. If the judicial system operated as smoothly as you seem to suggest, OJ would be in jail for manslaughter, I would have lost my license, and Honda would be broke.
