Purchasing Extended Warranty After the purchase of the car

Hey can you go to a dealer, (while you are still within factory warranty) and purchased extended warranty, even after you have purchased the vehicle and have had it for some 3 weeks?

I have been wondering this too, I think that a seperate company buys your warranty and they pay for the repairs...

I was told by my dealership I had 30 days after purchase date. Keep in mind this was in Canada.

You can purchase the warranty later, when you'll actually know if you need it or not. I'm sure different dealerships will give you different pricing. Check around locally.

Also, PM members CollegeHillsHonda and cbondhonda. They both work at Honda dealerships and might be able to help.

Thanks! I will PM CollegeHillsHonda and cbondhonda as well.

From some of the prices I have seen for the Extended Warranties on the web I have been wondering if I got shafted on the price.

I did find out you can cancel the extended warranty even if you financed it - the refund goes to your lien holder to reduce your loan on the back end (means you pay the car off early). But then you need to buy a new Extended Warranty somewhere else out of your own pocket.

So why do you say it's junk?

In my book, it's buying insurance.

I wish that I sprung for the bumper-to-bumper extended warranty on my '02Jeep Grand Cherokee.....I'm at 45k miles and I've already dumped over $1.8k in repairs into it (items not covered by their 7/70 power-train warranty). Spent $430 last week on a new power steering pump. I was going to just do the job myself, but I was off on business trip and my wife really needed the car.

I purchased an extended warranty which has roadside assistance, free rentals, and tire coverage. It extends the factory bumper to bumper from 3yr/36k to 5y/60k. It was $900, but they lowered my APR 1% since I purchased it.

All in all it cost me $360. ~6$/month. Not bad insurance in my opinion. Plus, if I sell the car in 5 years I'll know I will have EVER LITTLE THING covered until then. The only repair bills will be routine maintenance.

Follow up: Seems I did get the wrong end of the deal. I went to my dealer - canceled the plan. The irony, my dealer acted as their's was the best, even went on to try to say that others are "a scam" - even though their's costs are 3X (and more) that of reputable dealers elsewhere. Put them to the test on prices, without naming dealers (they should know their competition), my dealer wouldn't budge, not even an offer to "set things right" cash correction, plan adjustment - nodda - nothing. None the less - it is canceled now.

Once things get "settled" I probably go get a better deal online. Moral of the story - if you want HondaCare - price shop and buy it online vs the dealer (this is high profit item for some dealers and they eat it up).
