Extended warranty and servicing...
well, i have an extended warranty purchased with my 07 si sedan. i have just performed my first oil change, at about 3100 miles. i am due for the "first service" soon, however, i am wondering if im going to go back to the dealer to pick it up when its done and wind up with a bill for $400 just to check out the car for the first service? im not sure about others, but my dealer does not have a deductible fee when dropping it off for service. however, will i have any type of charge just for them to check out the car for the first time?
also, since i have an extended warranty, if something on the car does need to be fixed or changed, will they NOT honor the warranty unless im bringing the car in on its SCHEDULED time basis? or they dont care when i bring it in and my extended warranty will be honored no matter when i do bring it in? thanks! |

My advice to you is to call or stop by the dealer and ask them what services are performed at a given mileage interval and what the costs associated with that service are. Then you'll know for sure. |

If all you did was the oil change and you take it to the dealer YES they'll charge for the items your ASK them to perform.
TRICK part is. Most of what needs to be done is done (ar at least they say they do) during a basic oil change (aka 20.00). All it is is check fluids and inspect other items. DON'T just blindly ask for a 5k or 10k service. Because they'll get you for the max amount and it will be that dealeers service plan -- which is MORE than what Honda requires. |

well i did the oil change...so if i call up my dealer and schedule an appt. for the first service and have them perform only the services done with a first service...do you think i will be charged for anything? im not asking them to do any extra than what they have to.

so if i call up my dealer and schedule an appt. for the first service and have them perform if you want them to work you must pay only the services done with a first service...do you think i will be charged for anything? im not asking them to do any extra than what they have to. [color="Red"]Be sure and give them a list of what you want done. DO NOT ask for a 5k or 7.5k service becuase they'll give you what the call "service"
Read my other post. You might be better off just asking for an oil change. Stop by and see what they do for free on a basic oil change. |

Stick with HondaCare and you will have no problems getting things fixed. Honda wants to keep you happy so you buy another car - so if that means covering a part that normally would not be covered then they will do it. Aftermarket warranty companies on the other hand don't give a crap about you after they get you money because they don't sell cars.

Secondly, owning a 20k civic is not owning a 50k+ Cadillac or BMW....regular servicing is not included in the price of the vehicle. That being said, if you have extended warranties or regular warranties, honda will be checking to see your history. If you did them yourself and cannot prove to them that you did the oil change they have the right to void your warranty in relation to any engine components. They will not decline you warranty on something like a ball joint because you havnt done an oil change, however they will if there is evidence of an accident that could have caused the problem. Thirdly, you should have all of this information already, how do you buy a new vehicle without going over this stuff? You should have documents with a maintenance schedule on it. Your maint minder system will indicate which service is needed, usually the first is always an A1 service. Oil change and tire rotation, thats it. If you go to the dealer and get surprised when you return with a bigger bill then when you signed their paper, you dont have to pay. Just make sure you know what you are signing, they have to give you a written estimate before doing any work, so you should never be surprised when you go to pickup your car. Cheers. |

To the OP: There seems to be some confusion over "extended warranty" and "no charge service". Your extended warranty is nothing more than an extension of the manufacturers original warranty. It doesn't include any routine maintenance. You are responsible for that. You need to call the dealer you'd take it to and ask for service and ask them what is the cost for whatever mileage service is needed. You can mention to them you do your own oil changes and they will subtract that portion from the bill.
As an aside, what is your age? |

my age? im 20. but what does that have anything to do with it? hah....well, i cant prove to them i did the oil change, dont have the receipts from the oil purchase. who keeps that?!...however, i just want them to check out the suspension popping and other defects i noticed wrong with the car after i had picked it up 2 months ago...now, they arent going to charge me for looking at something such as the suspension popping, correct?

They shouldn't charge unless they don't find any problem and then they may. Some shops are now charging for examining vehicles that don't require any service. You should keep your receipts on future oil/filter purchases to prove you are buying the oil on a timely basis. It could be important for defending your warranty rights.

Having the receipt is proof that you bought (and presumably changed) the oil at the prescribed mileage interval. It shows that you performed the required maintenance ...they will not just take your word for it.
You should keep a couple of large folders or envelopes and for receipts...one for car related purchases, another for other significant purchases such as electronic gadgets, clothes and other high-dollar items. They will come in handy when you want to make a claim for lost goods in case of fire or theft or whatever. Also, in your owners manual you should enter the date and mileage of whatever service you perform on the car...e.g. oil change on 08/08/07 - 4500 miles, 5 qts Amsoil 0W-30 and new Amsoil Ea-O oil filter. When you take it in for service you'll have a record of what you'ev done, and when you want to sell the car the prospective buyer will be able to see that the car received proper care and attention. |

Missing one set of receipts probably won't kill you but you need to keep them from now on. There's no way to know for sure unless/until you need them for proof but if you can show the proper pattern minus one receipt they should figure you took care of that one too.

The first official service usually consists mostly of "inspect this" and "inspect that". I take my 04 Pilot in and ask for the minimum service to maintain the warrantee, which is usually FAR less than the standard 10k, 30k, 45k, etc service schedule. I do all the inspecting, greasing, cabin air filter changes, etc, myself. I plan on doing the same thing for my 07 Civic EX.

5 part folder. Use each part to keep track of maintance, insurance, loan, mods, etc etc. This is VALUABLE. Not only to you for now. But if you sell the car this will add some value to prove how you've cared for the car.
I tape receipts to a full size sheet of paper and write down on the paper date and milage of type of work done. |
