There is a filter wrench you can purchase that covers the top of the filter, allowing for easier removal.

I think it has a 1inch square peg at the end so you can use a wrench.

The device is like 7 bucks i think.

To me FTW means Fack The World.

Nevermind the the "key" & just stab a screwdriver in it the first time & then from then on you're good.

kinda dumb to do unless you've given up on everything else

get a swivel head oil filter wrench from an autoparts store.... its sort of like a strap wrench and with this tool i removed the oil filter in minutes

stabbing a screwdriver is dumb because you'll get oil everywhere... if you loosen it with a filter wrench you can slip a ziploc bag over it then remove to catch all the oil

These are usually the best method for getting hard-to-reach filters. The hole is for a 3/8" drive ratchet.

That's what I did as soon as I couldn't just easily twist it off. Yeah it makes a mess but if you're scared of getting some oil on you then why don't you just pay someone to do your oil change for you. I've done the screwdriver method since it took me about 3hrs to do my first oil change on my EP3. Ever since then I just give the oil filter a couple of trys then the screwdriver comes out. I've used this method on my '02 EP3, '05 EM2, '07 GD3 & '07 FA5 for all of their first oil changes.

you need a cup type oil filter wrench size 65/14 (or maybe 64/14 - i cannot be 100 % sure)
for the price take both.

Keys

KEY 1

KEY 2

Both keys cost under ten bucks at the auto store but only one is the correct one.

BTW I have my local independant mechanic do the oil changes because he was the one who installed my tires. While I get an oil change, he rotates the tires for free. Not bad for $22. I know him by name, Terry and he knows me by name, the only people that I know well enough to be on a first name basis, other than my wife of course: Jim my butcher; Mark my barber, and Tim my preacher. Ain't small town life great?

Correct or incorrect the screwdriver works & I already own. It's kind of hard to get the "correct key" when the oil is drained from the car.

What oil are you having Terry put in your car for $22? I do my own oil changes & the oil & filter cost alone is $40(Royal Purple & K&N oil filter).

ok quick qualifier

I do not have a high performance civic. just a standard civic EX. Nor do I live in Florida so i don't have as many environmental conditions (sand, salt, f'in bugs, ect.) to worry about. So I don't need $40 worth of oil and filters.

Terry, I'm pretty sure is a Valvolene man. But if I wanted him to use high performance stuff he would do it. And if it needed it he would tell me because he also works with high performance vehicles that go around in circles all day.

I base my comparison with the oil change this way. Oil filter and oil for my civic at Auto zone is $12 so that means that i get charged $10 over what I would pay for oil change AND tire rotation. He would take one hour, I would take four.

The whole deal with the comment about my mechaninic is that he is my friend, just like my barber, butcher, and pastor. Friends don't let friends buy junk, or let them buy things they don't need.

Reg. rest of post. When I did my own oil changes, I used to use a screwdriver too, but that was because I couldn't get an oil wrench for under $10. Some people were recomending the slip joint type filter wrench. I tried that.. I went back to the screwdriver. The one I posted was a pic of a wrench that fits a specific filter and it won't slip. Those two "keys" were the only two that I would recomened using, unless you like busted nuckles.

The post was more of a jab at the "special key" that you need to have.

i just use those filter wrenches that look like channel locks. for me, they
work the best and most universal between my cars.

suppose you can use those K&N filters next time cause they have a nut looking
thing welded on the can. you can take your socket and loosen it.

Better oil is better oil no matter what you drive. Back when I bought my first Civic EX back in '98 I still ran synthetic oil(Mobil 1 5w20) in that car. When I purchased my '02 EP3 I continued to use Mobil 1 until I got access to Royal Purple. My wife's uncle owns a motorcycle shop & he swears by Royal Purple. Upon further talks with him I then switched to Royal Purple & haven't looked back.

I'm not discounting the knowledge your mechanic friend has but I don't undertsand why he wouldn't recommend better oil for your car. If he races cars then I'm sure he runs synthetic in his racecar.

Four hours for an oil change. It takes me about an hour to do an oil change myself. I could do it faster but I let it drian for about half an hour.

I too could care less about the special key to get the oil filter off. Why should I go & buy some special tool when I have a screwdriver in my toolbox & it works just fine?

While I tend to not bash many oils.....one of the few exceptions is Valvoline All Climate.

Not a very well made oil on paper.

Believe it or not, and you most likely won't, but a higher quality, lower priced, and much better oil is Wal-Mart's Supertech.

Synthetics really aren't for everyone. I've learnt that over the years. For instance, people that absolutely refuse to go longer than 3000 miles between changes....synthetics would be a waste of money for them.

So I have a few "back-up" recommendations for people. Supertech made the grade, but All Climate failed.

Please pick a good filter too:

www.oilfilterstudy.com
http://home.mindspring.com/~cewhite3nc/index.html

Follow that up with periodical auto-rx.com cleanings (or maintenance dozes) and FP60 by www.lubecontrol.com and your civic will outlast the world and more importantly it will have a higher quality of engine life.

Lots of people tell me, "Oh these [insert brand here] never die." My response is how well do you want it to run? I'd rather be an in-shape 90 year old than be a 90 year old that can't move himself around. And that's the approach I put towards preventative maintenance on my cars and in my recommendations.

Please note I'm a very well informed AMSOIL dealer and instead of saying, "OMG if you don't use AMSOIL your engine will explode" I give non-bias advice.

Plus the tires. I don't have a regular jack. so to use the Honda jack, jack up car, take off tire put on spare, switch all four tires takes forever.

I could care less about all the other garbage on in this thread. The opinion that I gave was to the OP. The only two tools that I would recommend were the fitted wrench AND the screwdriver because all the other tools that i have used, slips and causes great discomfort to your nuckles.

And I offered up the opinion that NO MATER what oil and filter you use the mechanic is only going to charge you about $10 over what you paid for your oil and filter. Valvoline, quaker state,Wally-world, Royal purple, et al.

And personally i don't care what oil my mechanic uses, because...as I have said before he is my FRIEND not just my mechanic. He has taken care of my cars for more than five years. It is a matter of trust. If I needed something better, He would use it.

So if you want to save ten bucks then change your oil and rotate the tires.
personally I would rather go fishing.

The screw driver idea kinda scares me in the sense that what if you hit and miss and hit something else? And paying Honda for a tool just to take off an oil filter? What I usually do is get those yellow rubber kitchen gloves to get the filter off -- works like a charm. But then again, to each his own.

Re gloves: There you go.

The tool I wouldn't buy at honda either.I just go to a auto store to get one, cheaper.
