Nitrogen in my tires?

I've heard about this, What is the advantage? Is it expensive? Where do I get it?

Its more stable PSI vs. "air". I've heard its an added cost of course, you'd just have to ask around at tires shops.

As temperature varies, the tire pressure is more consistent than with normal air.

Not sure if there are additional benefits, I'd have to look into it.

Here's what I found. http://www.automotivedigest.com/view...ticlesID=19827

Situation
1. NASCAR racers use tires filled w/ pure nitrogen
2. So do large commercial trucks, aircraft, even space shuttle
3. Some drivers say using tires filled w/ nitrogen improves fuel economy
4. Proponents say nitrogen maintains tire pressure longer, resists heat buildup
5. Skeptics say proper inflation is key, added cost of pure nitrogen not justified
6. Air we breathe is already 78% nitrogen

Significant Points
1. Proper inflation is key to improving fuel economy up to 3% whatever used to fill
2. Nationwide fewer than 10% of tire dealers offer nitrogen but number growing
3. Finding way into mainstream at growing number of tire dealers including Costco
4. Most dealers charge $2-$5/tire for initial nitrogen fill-up, generally offer free lifetime refills
5. Improved pressure maintenance important for sensitive automatic monitoring systems

Background
1. Nitrogen molecules bigger than oxygen molecules so seeps out more slowly
2. Nitrogen resists heat buildup better than air which contains moisture
3. Nitrogen reduces oxidation that can damage tire from inside out
4. Nitrogen is inert gas so no safety or environmental issues

Nitrogen doesn't leak out as fast as regular air so you'll have more consistent pressure in the tires. There are only a few places who fill tires with Nitrogen but Costco is the only place near me who I know does.

I got some Michelin Pilot Sport summer tires for my G35 at Costco. They fill all their tires with nitrogen. Supposed to be slightly lighter and prevents tire rot, although to be honest, I never had a tire rot out on me.

The most important part with Nitrogen is #4 on the background. Nitrogen is inert, and that is its main advantage over plain air (~78% Nitrogen, ~20% Oxygen). Oxygen is not inert, in fact, oxygen is far from inert, causing reactions with almost anything (see #3 under background).

I will be switching as soon as I can find a place that does it. It's the way of the future.

The dealership should be able to do it for you.....but im sure there are places that will do it cheaper. Also all new cars come with nitrogen already in the tires.

What makes you think that is true? I don't know that to be fact but doubt manufacturers (outside of premium brands) would go to the trouble of doing that when "air" is free.
My take on potential benefits is there are two. #1 is that nitrogen does have larger molocules than "air" and therefore less likely to leak through the tire wall. It will still leak if you have one (a leak) e.g. a nail in the tread. #2 Nitrogen contains no moisture and "air" is loaded with it. This internal moisture corrodes alloy wheels (steel wheels too) on the inside and produces damage to rubber on the inner side too.

Close, but you know another term for rust is oxidation, "OXIdation". Guess what the OXI prefix to the word means, it doesn't mean water (H2O), it means oxygen. Oxygen is not inert, and causes these sorts of reactions. Oxygen will corrode alloy wheels, not the moisture.

These nitrogen threads come up on all forums, I swear. Just keep your tires inflated consistantly, thats all you have to do. Forget about the nitrogen.

There is a shop around here that keeps begging me to do it. They want $40 to do all 4 tires. Does this sound like a good deal?
