Holy Crap!!!™

I was just minding my own business and posting information for the person that started this thread.
Here’s some more info on Nitrogen in your car tires. Wikipedia under applications section. Filling automotive and aircraft tires due to its inertness and lack of moisture or oxidative qualities, as opposed to air, though this is not necessary for consumer automobiles. Full read from wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nitrogen Another.... Overall, filling up with nitrogen won't hurt and may provide some minimal benefit. Is it worth it? If you go to some place like Costco that does it for free with new tires, sure, why not? Elsewhere, though, I've seen prices quoted as high as $10 per tire, which is way more than I'd pay. Rather than shell out for nitrogen, you'd be better off just checking and adjusting your tire pressure regularly, something the NHTSA says less than 60 percent of U.S. motorists actually do. Nitrogen or N2 will give a more consistent air pressure, that is the main reason why they use it, don't be lazy and just check your pressure monthly. I was wondering if someone would pull out some ideal gas laws or the change in enthalpy and how it is going to help. This thread is cracking me up, I would like to see where some of these guys get their info from.

From expeditersonline.com forum:
A nine-month double-blind study conducted by a large private fleet saved 110,000 gallons of diesel with a nitrogen tire inflation program, according to a paper prepared for the annual Clemson University Tire Industry Conference. The study also uncovered substantial gains in tire tread life and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions that could be exchanged for revenue on carbon trading markets. Running 70 tractors and 117 trailers in longhaul operations, the Drexan Corp. found the nitrogen system improved fuel efficiency by 3.1% compared to a tire pressure maintenance program using air and 6.1% compared to no tire pressure maintenance program. The test also found that the nitrogen-fill also extended average tread life by 86% compared to an air-fill tire pressure maintenance program. |

Forgive me if Im repeating anything here...
If youre like me and the TPM light bugs the crap out of you when you drive out into the cold, Nitrogen will help stop that. My service advisor at Honda told me that she got about 8k more miles out of nitrogen filled s2000 tires versus her previous air filled ones. Its well worth the 24 bucks to me. |

I just keep a $25 portable air compressor and a $1.50 tire gauge in my trunk, and check the pressure every 3 to 4 weeks. Normally over a 30 day time span, the tires only lose approx. 2 psi. If I need to fill it, I max it out at 37-38psi. The car has 37K miles on OEM tires with plenty of tread left.
