i've had that happen at times. what i find that works for me is usually put it in 2nd or 3rd then then put it back into first and it'll go right in. only prob for me is the 3rd gear sometimes. feels like sometimes it's not going in all the way. need to get the tranny amsoil fluid to see if it helps.

I've had this in every manual tranny i've ever owned, to be specific, a 2000 Civic, a 2000 Prelude SH, and now my 2006 Civic Si. I also work at a dealership and hear of this, and it is a normal thing. There is nothing that can be done. The way to get it into first is to like other people said quickly put it into 2nd or 3rd gear, then back to first.....this does happen but it doesnt happen "all the time". I might get this once every 2 months.

I know this might seem simple

I know this might seem a little too simple of a reply but has anyone ever thought about taking the service rep for a RIDE? The Mech. has a set way of checking things, a standard. So if they do it the standard way and it doesn't do it guess what..to them, nothing is wrong. So take the rep for a ride and duplicate the problem. Then he/she can better relate the problem to the mech.

That being said, he will prob. tell you what everyone else has.

If I find myself being locked out of first gear, I'll just put it into second gear and then it usually goes into first without any issues.

i understand i can easily put in in second or neutral and then in will go into first or just take off on second but i sucks having to play games and have tricks on driving my new 2007 Si. i got a service schedule in the next 300 mi so when i go in for service im going to see if i cn getting the whole thing taken care of and hopefully i can replicate the problem at that moment like sjlarue recomends

I've brought it in, but the problem is, that it happens every now and then, so if you take it in, it might not even happen, and they'll not even feel the problem so they can't do anything about it.

i have the same issue, took it in to the dealer and they had a mechanic drive it and he said i'm probably not putting in the clutch all the way.

I have experienced this "first gear lockout" also, but it's more of an annoyance than a serious issue. I've driven some terribly-engineered five-speeds before. The Honda 6MT has some quirky behavior, but it's the best tranny I've ever dealt with by far.

You won't have any grounds with which to sue Honda. I am always on my brake when I shift into first gear from a standstill; I don't let my brake pedal up until I'm in gear and ready to feather the clutch. It seems that you let go of the brake pedal first, and then put the car into gear and drive. Therefore, if you roll back and hit the car behind you, it's because of your particular driving style, which Honda is in no way responsible for.

Yea i have a bad habit of putting it into 1st, then back to N, then back to 1st. I get it locked out sometimes (most likely cause the dog gears are stopped since the clutch pedal is in, kinda like you know how its hard to put it into gear w/ the engine off sometimes)

Just pop it into N and take your foot off the clutch, then back in and put it into 1st or just go to 2nd then back to 1st. Either should work just fine, you just need to rotate the dog gears a little bit so the teeth fit into each other.
